Never underestimate the power of empathy.. especially when faced with a disgruntled client.

A few weeks ago, a client of mine demanded some answers as to why the figures in his financial statements didn’t make sense to him, and of which, he claimed, were incorrect. He was almost furious, citing that his books were ‘done wrongly’.

in a matter of 20 minutes, I managed to not only soothe him down, but he also ended up apologizing for the way he was acting. He felt better and thanked me for my explanation. It turned out his lack of understanding resulted in an incorrect assumption. Basically, he interpreted some figures erroneously and assumed the worst. I showed him otherwise.

How did I manage to change his demeanor in just a few minutes?
1) I seeked to understand EXACTLY what he was interpreting. His perspective.
2) I conveyed my understanding, and most importantly, his frustration
3) I was calm, non defensive, and conveyed curiosity about his perspective.
4) I then non-judgmentally guided him step by step towards the proper workflow, thus giving him the understanding of the true picture of his financials. I did not have any need to tell him he was ‘wrong’ (I never liked the word ‘wrong’ anyway). Regardless, he himself admitted his own error.

Empathy is key, When your clients feel heard and understood, they will most likely have no need to go elsewhere. I am grateful for the opportunities to practice my ‘empathy’ muscle when needed❤️
