Gym owners: Q4 is almost here. 👀

Fall classes are filling back up, schedules are settling in, and before we know it, it’ll be year-end.

Now is a really good time to check in on your numbers.

✓ How did summer revenue compare to the rest of the year?
✓ Are memberships trending back up for fall?
✓ Are your bank and credit card accounts reconciled?
✓ Do payroll and contractor expenses make sense compared to revenue?
✓ Are equipment, merchandise, events, and new programs showing up correctly?

Because December is a terrible time to discover something hasn’t been right since March. 😬

You don’t need perfect numbers. You need accurate numbers you can actually use.

There’s still plenty of time to get there before year-end.

If you own a gym, you probably already know summer can look a little different.

Vacations happen. Kids’ schedules change. People spend more time outside. Memberships pause or drop off.

But rent, payroll, software, insurance, and all those other fixed expenses? They don’t take the summer off.

That’s why understanding the pattern in your numbers matters.

Clean, up-to-date books can help you see which months are consistently stronger, when revenue tends to dip, and how much cushion you may need going into a slower season.

The goal isn’t to eliminate seasonality—it’s to stop being surprised by it.

Your gym’s revenue may be seasonal. Your financial planning shouldn’t be.

Before Yoga Pants Bookkeeping, there was Yoga Pants Bakery. 🩷

I sold gluten-free and sourdough baked goods, filled tables like this, and learned a lesson every small-business owner needs to learn:

Selling out doesn’t always mean making money.

Ingredients were cheaper then, but I definitely undercharged for my labor. It’s easy to price the product and forget to price the time, prep, cleanup, packaging, shopping, setup—and approximately 400 tiny tasks behind it.

That experience is part of why I care so much about helping small-business owners understand what their numbers are actually saying.

Revenue is exciting.

Profit is what keeps the business alive.

And apparently, the pink branding was here to stay. 😂

Not all progress is visible.

Sometimes moving a business forward looks exciting:

A new client.
A launch.
A big opportunity.

Other times, it looks like building the website.

Improving the process.

Writing the emails.

Following up.

Learning what works—and adjusting what doesn’t.

Those quieter steps may not produce an immediate result, but they still matter.

Small-business ownership requires doing some of the work before there’s any proof that it will pay off.

So this week, I’m working on my website.

Next week, I’m focusing on email outreach.

Today, I’m continuing to show up.

Because progress doesn’t have to be dramatic to be real.

Sometimes it simply looks like continuing to build.

Every business owner knows what they sell.

Far fewer know what it actually costs them to deliver it.

You can have plenty of work…

…and still lose money.

You can increase revenue…

…and see less profit.

You can feel busy every single day…

…without actually moving your business forward.

That’s why I believe bookkeeping is about more than categorizing transactions.

It’s about understanding what’s working, what’s not, and where your next good decision should come from.

Because growth isn’t measured by how busy you are.

It’s measured by what you keep.
