Working from home this year? You have two ways to deduct your home office, and picking the wrong one can cost you.

The Simplified Method: $5 per square foot of your home office, capped at 300 sq ft ($1,500 max). No receipts needed, no depreciation to track. Fast and clean (Rev. Proc. 2013-13).

The Regular Method: You deduct the actual percentage of your home used for business, mortgage interest, utilities, insurance, repairs, depreciation, all prorated (Form 8829, IRC §280A). More paperwork, but often a bigger deduction if you have a larger space or high housing costs.

Here is the catch most people miss: the space has to be used regularly AND exclusively for business. Your kitchen table does not count if the kids do homework there too.

I run both calculations for my self-employed and S-corp clients every year before filing, sometimes the simplified method wins, sometimes the regular method saves hundreds more. It depends entirely on your numbers.

Not sure which one fits your situation? Drop a comment or send me a DM, happy to walk you through it.

Hi, I'm Alad — an IRS-licensed Enrolled Agent running A Plus Tax & Accounting. Every meeting happens on video, so I can help you no matter where in the U.S. you live.

Many of my clients are dual citizens or recent Israeli immigrants managing accounts on both sides of the ocean. Quick reminder: if you have signature authority over foreign financial accounts totaling more than $10,000 at any point in the year, you likely need to file an FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) — separate from your regular tax return, with steep penalties for missing it.

FBAR, a straightforward 1040, or setting up a new LLC — I work in both English and Hebrew, so you never have to explain your situation twice.

If you're self-employed, a 1099 contractor, or have rental or investment income without withholding, September 15 is a date you don't want to miss — it's the deadline for your Q3 2026 estimated tax payment.

Here's the part most people don't realize: the IRS runs on a pay-as-you-go system. If you underpay throughout the year, you can face a penalty even if you pay your full balance by April (IRC §6654) — regardless of whether you end up owing more or getting a refund later.

A few quick reminders:
→ Base your payment on either 100% of last year's tax (110% if your AGI was over $150,000) or 90% of what you'll owe this year — whichever protects you from penalties (Form 1040-ES instructions).
→ Freelancers, landlords, and small business owners: this is the deadline that sneaks up on people most.
→ If your income shifted a lot this year, let's run the numbers together before the 15th instead of guessing.

I work with clients nationwide by video, so wherever you are, we can get your Q3 payment right before the deadline.

Drop a comment or send a DM if you want a quick gut-check on your number. Better to ask now than get a penalty notice next spring.

Some questions I get every week: "Are you licensed in my state?" The answer is simple — as an IRS Enrolled Agent, I'm federally licensed to represent taxpayers in all 50 states, not just New York (Treasury Circular 230). That's the EA advantage: one credential, nationwide authority, no state lines.

Add in that every client meeting happens over video — no office to visit, no time off work to sit in a waiting room — and it means I can help a family in Texas, a business owner in Florida, or an Israeli-American client filing US returns from Tel Aviv, all with the same level of service.

And for my Hebrew-speaking clients — I get it, this stuff can be twice as confusing when you're translating tax terms too.

Have a tax question and want someone who actually speaks your language (literally)? Drop a comment or send a DM — happy to help.

Got a letter from the IRS? Take a breath — most notices are fixable, and panicking (or ignoring it) is what turns a manageable problem into a crisis.

Here is what I tell clients the moment a notice shows up:

1) Read the whole thing. Note the notice number (top right corner) and the response deadline.
2) Do not call the number on a random IRS text or email — that is not how the IRS contacts you. First contact is almost always by mail (IRS Pub. 1660).
3) Check if it is a proposed change (like a CP2000) or an actual bill. They are handled very differently.
4) Know your appeal rights. Most notices come with a window to dispute before it becomes final (IRC §6330).
5) If you owe more than you can pay, an Offer in Compromise may reduce the total (IRC §7122) — but it has to be filed correctly the first time.

I have represented clients through audits, levies, and back-tax cases nationwide — virtually, wherever you are. The worst move is doing nothing.

Got a notice sitting on your counter? Send me a message — I will tell you exactly what it means and what your options are.

Running your business as an LLC and profits are finally climbing? At a certain point, staying taxed as a sole proprietor (or partnership) starts costing you more than it needs to.

Here's the shift I walk clients through: once your LLC's net profit is consistently landing above roughly $40,000-$50,000 a year, electing S-Corp tax treatment (Form 2553) can meaningfully reduce your self-employment tax bill (IRC §1401) — because only your salary, not your full profit, is subject to it.

The catch? The IRS requires you to pay yourself a "reasonable salary" before taking any distributions (Rev. Rul. 74-44). Skip that step and you're inviting an audit, not saving money.

And yes, there's a tradeoff: payroll setup, a separate 1120-S return, and more moving pieces to track (IRC §6072). For the right income level, the savings are worth it. For others, it's added complexity without added benefit.

I help clients run the actual numbers before they file anything — because "everyone says S-Corp" isn't a strategy.

Wondering if your LLC has crossed that line? Send me a DM and I'll walk you through the math.

If you filed for a tax extension back in April, October 15 might feel far away — but it’s closer than you think, and now is the time to get ahead of it.

An extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay (IRC §6651(a)(2)) — so if you owe, interest has likely been accruing since April (IRC §6601). The sooner you settle up, the less that adds up.

A few things I recommend doing this week if you’re on extension:

✅ Confirm your extended deadline — October 15, 2026 (Treas. Reg. §1.6081-4)
✅ Gather any missing documents — K-1s, 1099s, foreign account statements
✅ Pay any remaining balance now to stop interest from stacking up
✅ Self-employed? You can still fund a SEP-IRA up until October 15 (IRC §404(h))
✅ Don’t wait until the second week of October — rushed returns are where mistakes happen

I work with clients nationwide over video, so wherever you are, we can get your extension filed clean and on time — no last-minute scramble.

Drop a comment or send me a DM if you want to get this off your plate before fall gets busy.

Own a rental property in Israel — or a place in the U.S. while you're living in Israel? 🏠 That income doesn't stay local for tax purposes.

As a U.S. person, rental income from foreign real estate is taxable here no matter where the property sits (IRC §61). Foreign residential rentals also depreciate differently than U.S. property — the IRS requires straight-line depreciation over 30 years for foreign residential real estate, versus 27.5 years domestically (IRC §168(g)). Get this wrong and you're either underreporting income or missing deductions you're entitled to.

Sell the property, and the gain is reportable in the U.S. too — though a foreign tax credit (IRC §901) can often offset tax you've already paid to Israel under the treaty. If the proceeds land in an Israeli bank account, don't forget FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) once your foreign accounts cross $10,000 combined at any point in the year.

Cross-border real estate gets complicated fast — happy to walk through your specific situation. Drop a comment or send a DM.

If you filed for an extension back in April, October 15th feels far away right now. It isn't.

That deadline is about 10 weeks out, and the taxpayers who scramble in the first week of October are almost always the same ones who waited until the last week of September to gather their documents.

A few things worth doing this month instead of that week:

Pull together your W-2s, 1099s, and K-1s now while they're easy to find. Reconcile your bookkeeping if you're a business owner — don't hand your preparer a shoebox in September. Double-check what you already paid with your extension request back in April, because an extension to file is not an extension to pay, and interest keeps accruing on any unpaid balance whether you've filed or not (IRC §6601). And if you owe more than you paid, the failure-to-pay penalty is still ticking too (IRC §6651).

The clients who reach out in August instead of October get more of my attention, fewer surprises, and usually a smaller bill. I'd rather spend September double-checking your return than racing a deadline.

Filed an extension and haven't started gathering your documents yet? Send me a message — let's get ahead of it together.
