Sitting in Starbucks right now cramming for the CFP-Estate Planning exam I’m taking this weekend.

And yes—I'm pretty nervous.

But going through the material has been a reminder of something that gets overlooked far too often:

Plans that get done and never get review.

financial plans, estate plans, and “life plans” are not one-and-done documents. They are living systems that need to be reviewed.

A few years ago, I was speaking with the VP of HR at a large company about a situation they had dealt with internally.

An employee had passed away, and what followed was a difficult beneficiary issue tied to a life insurance policy through work.

He had been legally separated from his spouse. The divorce was amicable. They continued living in the same home and co-parenting their children.

He never updated his beneficiary designation after the divorce.
Here’s where it gets complicated:

In Oklahoma, divorce can automatically revoke an ex-spouse’s beneficiary rights on certain life insurance contracts (Oklahoma Statutes §15-178).

So when he passed, despite what was originally on file, the designation did not function the way most people would assume.

The result was painful.

She was left with a mortgage,
unanswered questions,
and no clear documentation to support a different intent.

And all of it came down to something small that was never updated.

Situations like this are not always common in the exact form—
but the underlying issue is everywhere.

Outdated beneficiaries.
Old account titles.
Wills that no longer match reality.
Plans that were accurate “at the time” but never revisited.

Estate planning is rarely about complexity.

It’s about maintenance.
