“I have plenty of money — it’s just all locked up in retirement accounts.”

I hear this constantly from people considering early retirement. Here’s the truth: locked up doesn’t mean unreachable.

A few of the ways people access retirement money before 59½:

→ SEPP (72(t)) — set, calculated withdrawals from an IRA, penalty-free. You’re locked into the schedule for 5 years or until 59½, whichever is longer.

→ Rule of 55 — leave your job in or after the year you turn 55, and you can access that 401(k) penalty-free. Doesn’t apply to IRAs or old 401(k)s.

→ Taxable brokerage accounts — no age limits, no elections, no penalties. Just money that’s there when you need it.

Each comes with real trade-offs, and the right answer depends entirely on your specific situation.

At Ametrine Wealth, we look at each client’s unique picture and figure out what actually makes sense for them — because having wealth tied up in retirement accounts should never be the reason you feel stuck working longer than you want to.

If your RSUs vest and you just let them sit — that’s not a strategy. That’s an accident waiting to happen.

RSUs can be one of the best wealth-building tools you have. But life gets busy, they vest, and most people do nothing. No decision, no plan — just shares piling up.
Here’s the problem: doing nothing is still a choice.

Every quarter you don’t sell, your portfolio gets more concentrated in one company — the same one your paycheck depends on. If that stock has a bad year, you could be looking at losing your job and a big piece of your net worth at the same time.

Sticking your head in the sand isn’t a strategy. It’s a plan you didn’t choose on purpose.

The fix is usually simple: sell as they vest, reinvest into something built for you.

Your money deserves a plan. Let’s talk. DM me or book a free consultation — link in bio.

A client’s spreadsheet showed $1,500–$3,000 left over every month.

Her bank account? $3,000. Investments? $0.

So I asked — gently, out of genuine curiosity — where was it all going?

Her answer: “I guess my spreadsheet doesn’t include everything, like my Target runs.”

Here’s the thing: this isn’t really a story about Target. It’s about what happens to a financial plan when the numbers underneath it aren’t actually true.

If your real spending is off, everything built on top of it is off too — how much you can safely withdraw in retirement, whether you’re actually on track, how much risk you can afford to take. Garbage in, garbage out.

A lot of financial plans get built on the number a client hands over. I’d rather ask a few questions and dig in first — because your plan should be built on your real life, not your best guess at it.

DIY investors: are you actually rebalancing your portfolio? Or did it drift out of whack years ago and you just…haven’t looked?

Don’t have the time, patience or energy to stay on top of it? Let’s talk.

(PS: at Ametrine Wealth, investing is just one piece. We do a whole lot more.)

Yay, thanks for sending, can’t wait to read!!

The investment principles of Dimensional Fund Advisors have been a huge part of how I not only invest my clients money (as well as my own, because you can bet that I “eat my own cooking”), but also in how I think about the stock market, talk to my clients and help them STAY CALM in times of market volatility.

And btw, if you are a Chicago Booth alum (like me) then hopefully the name David BOOTH rings a bell 😉

If you’re a high earner but your finances still feel like an afterthought — you’re not alone.

Money is important, just rarely urgent. No deadline, no one calling about it — so it keeps getting pushed to “next weekend.” And next weekend never comes.

You’re already doing a lot right: maxing out your 401(k), 529s started, living within your means. You just haven’t built the bigger-picture plan yet.

This is who I work with — busy, high-earning families often overlooked by advisors because their portfolio isn’t “big enough,” even though their situation is anything but simple. I move at your pace, keep you on track, and stay proactive, so it’s not one more thing on your plate. And as a fiduciary, I’m required to work in your best interest.

Your money deserves a plan. I can help. DM me or book a free consultation — link in bio.

If you’re a high earner with young kids and a demanding career, the answer isn’t always “spend less.” Sometimes it’s “spend smarter — starting with your time.” 💸
