This tax season, the IRS is processing refunds slower than usual due to staffing cuts, heavy workloads, and required reviews for select credits.

Why the Delays? Staff reductions and a surge in filings are bottlenecking processing, while mandatory fraud checks under the PATH Act hold EITC and ACTC refunds until mid-February 2026.

Returns with errors or mismatches often trigger extra reviews, extending wait times beyond the norm.

What It Means for You?

E-filed returns with direct deposit typically arrive in about 21 days for standard filers. EITC or ACTC claimants will not see refunds until March 2, 2026 (or later if issues arise); check status via Where's My Refund? starting February 21.
