Financial control does not always begin with obvious restrictions. Sometimes, it sounds like an offer to “take care of everything”—with conditions attached.

Gabrielle Stone shares how financial manipulation affected her first marriage and how healing helped her recognize the red flags she once overlooked. Today, she is in a partnership where income may shift from month to month, but honest financial conversations remain constant.

A healthy relationship makes room for both partners’ goals, voices, and financial awareness.

Prenups, postnups and financial conversations have historically felt taboo—but avoiding the conversation doesn’t create financial security.
A prenup is entered into before marriage. A postnup is created after a couple is already married. If the relationship is moving toward separation or divorce, the appropriate document may be a separation or marital settlement agreement.
These are different legal agreements, with requirements that vary by state. But before negotiating terms, every couple should begin with one financial question:
What are we trying to accomplish?
The conversation doesn’t have to begin from a negative position. It can begin with getting informed, understanding one another’s goals and finding common financial ground.

Having a difficult financial conversation before marriage isn’t only about reaching an agreement. It’s also about learning whether you can honestly express your concerns, wants and needs—and whether your partner is willing to listen.
Marriage brings many challenging conversations: how you’ll manage money, whether you’ll have children, how you’ll parent and how you’ll respond when life doesn’t go according to plan.
If you can begin by working through one of the toughest topics together—your finances—you may be building the communication skills needed for everything that follows.

Financial disclosure shouldn’t be a one-time conversation.
Careers change. Businesses grow. Assets increase. Debt shifts. Families evolve. Why wouldn’t your financial conversations evolve, too?
Consider reviewing your financial life together every year: What did we own last year? What do we own now? What has changed—and what do we each need to understand better?
Financial clarity shouldn’t begin when a marriage is ending. It should be part of the relationship all along.

🎙️ New episode out now!

Prenups, postnups and separation agreements are often viewed as preparation for a marriage to end—but what if they could also create greater transparency and financial security throughout the relationship?

In this episode of the *We Chat Divorce Podcast*, Karen and Catherine discuss what couples should understand about their assets, debts and financial agreements—especially when one spouse steps away from the workforce or remains uninformed about the family’s finances.

Financial clarity shouldn’t begin when you’re getting divorced. It should be part of the relationship all along.

USA TODAY asked MDS co-founder Catherine Shanahan, CDFA®, to weigh in on the trad wife conversation — specifically, what happens financially when one partner steps away from work.

Her point: it could be the dad, it could be the mom — but the relationship will change. The couples who navigate that well are the ones who talked about money and values before the shift, not after.

The women profiled in this piece learned that the hard way. Their advice to the next generation is worth reading. 👇

Stacey Aquino, 53, said she "was a trad wife before it had a name." Now divorced, she's online warning young women to do things differently.

Sometimes you are not holding on to the relationship—you are holding on to the hope of what you believed it could become. When pain, grief and good memories exist together, your mind can become trapped trying to solve a puzzle that has no answer. Getting off that hamster wheel begins with accepting what the relationship actually was. Watch the full episode of WeChat Divorce.

When you believe your spouse is hiding money, the need to uncover every transaction can feel impossible to ignore. Jackie Miller understands that firsthand. During her divorce, she spent months—and hundreds of thousands of dollars—trying to follow the money and prove what her former spouse was doing.
Hidden assets are a legitimate concern and should be investigated strategically. But Jackie eventually realized that her need for justice had become another tether keeping her connected to her ex. It was consuming her time, money, energy and attention without necessarily improving her financial outcome.
The goal is not to ignore suspicious activity. It is to begin with the verified facts, identify the unknowns that could materially affect your settlement and understand the potential return before committing significant resources to the search.
