This would be an excellent tax to eliminate. Everything you worked for in life that you want to pass down to your family should go to your family. All your hard work shouldn’t be forced to go to taxes to benefit others.

Fixing Oregon’s Outdated Estate Tax: Protect Families and Small Businesses

Oregon’s “death tax” now captures families and small businesses it was never intended to target, driven by inflation and soaring land and housing values. Reform is needed to prevent forcing families to sell farms, homes, or businesses just to pay a tax triggered by death. And it would restore fairness - reflecting today’s economic realities.
Oregon’s estate tax currently applies to estates worth more than $1 million - one of the lowest thresholds in the nation. Lawmakers are considering whether to raise the exemption level, index it to inflation, or otherwise alter the tax as part of 2026 tax policy discussions.
Meanwhile, a ballot initiative could also seek to end the estate tax entirely.
