Is your small business looking for a loan?

You probably don’t realize that most banks will make their decision in the first 5 minutes of your meeting. The businesses that walk out with approvals are not always the strongest businesses; they are the ones that walk in prepared.

First, they are going to look at your tax return. Not your revenue, your bottom line. Most importantly, does your business make enough cash to cover the new debt payment with room to spare. This is the Debt Service Coverage Ratio.

Also, trends are important. If you are trending up it’s an easier sell than a business that has a three-year history of decline. Even if you can show that business is turning around or that the capital inflow will create new opportunities, it is still a hard sell. You want to show three consistent years of growth or steady income before walking through the door.

Next, they are going to look at you personally. Credit score, personal financial statement, outside income. You and your situation are a big part of the decision on your business loan. So, taking the time to clean up your personal credit score before this meeting is very important.
