We're officially halfway through 2026. πŸ“Š

And I want to ask you something directly,
Do you actually know where your business stands right now?

Not a guess. Not a feeling. Not "I think we're doing okay."

Actually know.

Here are three questions every small business owner should be able to answer today:
βœ… Are you on track to hit your revenue goal for 2026?
βœ… Is your business profitable right now β€” not just busy?
βœ… Are your expenses where you projected them to be?

If you hesitated on any of those, you're not alone. Most business owners are so focused on running the business day-to-day that checking the scoreboard becomes an afterthought.

Here's the problem with that.

The second half of the year is where course corrections actually matter. A pricing adjustment, an expense cut, a focus shift to your most profitable service β€” any of these can change how 2026 ends. But only if you know what the numbers are telling you right now.

You can't get to where you want to go if you don't know where you are.

True North Books & Balances helps small business owners get clear on their numbers, monthly reports, financial insights, and the visibility you need to make real decisions with confidence.
There is still time to finish 2026 strong. πŸ’ͺ

Let me tell you about something that came out of a recent client audit, because if you earn commissions, this applies to you too.

I completed a full commission audit for an insurance agency. Every carrier statement reviewed for payment accuracy, every BGA payment checked line by line.

The result? Everything was accurate. Every dollar accounted for.

And yet my client was still losing money.

Here's what I found.

The BGA was consistently sitting on commission payments for up to 30 days before releasing them. Month after month. Nobody caught it because the amounts were right, so nothing ever looked wrong.

But on commissions in the tens of thousands of dollars, a 30-day delay isn't a minor inconvenience. That's YOUR money sitting in someone else's account instead of yours. Not covering your expenses. Not paying down your credit line. Not earning a dime.

When I showed my client the pattern, they were stunned. They'd been watching for the deposit, seeing it land, and moving on. Nobody was looking at WHEN it should have arrived versus when it actually did.

Here's the thing, this isn't just an insurance problem.

Real estate agents: when did you last audit your commission statements against your brokerage agreement?

Insurance agents: are your carrier payments hitting when they should?

Financial reps: do your commissions have multiple tiers? When did you last verify you're being paid at the right tier for your production level?

If the answer to any of these is "I'm not sure" or "never," it might be time to take a closer look.

You'd be surprised what shows up when someone's actually looking.

πŸ‘‡ Drop a comment below: Have you ever audited your commission statements for timing, not just amount? I'd love to hear your experience.
