You could always make another dollar, but you can't make another minute."
This quote keeps running through my head after studying what just happened to NASCAR champion Kyle Busch.
He lost $8.5 MILLION on a retirement plan. Not from a bad investment. Not from a scam. From a poorly designed life insurance policy that was supposed to create safe, tax-free income for his family.
Here's the heartbreaking part:
Kyle did everything he thought was right. He worked with a credentialed advisor. He paid MASSIVE premiums ($10+ million). He trusted the illustrations showing hundreds of thousands per year in retirement income.
But the policy was designed to maximize the AGENT'S commission, not Kyle's retirement security.
The result?
After just 16 months, an independent review showed the policy was about to collapse. Not 16 years. Sixteen MONTHS.
The agent walked away with $300K-500K in commissions. Kyle lost everything.
Why am I telling you this story?
Because if it can happen to a NASCAR champion worth $80 million, it can happen to ANYONE.
And because the lesson here isn't about life insurance. It's about something bigger:
Don't let the pursuit of money erode your wealth.
Real wealth isn't your bank account. It's your DISCRETIONARY TIME. The freedom to spend your days however you choose. Time with family. Hobbies you love. Travel you've dreamed about.
You've worked 30-40 years to earn that time. Don't let a poorly designed financial strategy steal it from you.
Six things that went wrong in Kyle's case (and how to avoid them):
Death benefit way too large for his goals
Didn't account for his high-risk occupation
Policy designed for agent commissions, not client value
Money stuck in low-yield accounts for years
Real-world funding didn't match the perfect illustration
Nobody was monitoring it until it was too late
Here's what I do differently:
As a fiduciary advisor (legally required to put YOUR interests first), I design retirement strategies around one question:
"Will this protect your discretionary time, or steal it?"
If you have an IUL or any retirement strategy you're not 100% confident about, let's review it together. No sales pitch. Just honest analysis.
Because you can't make another minute.
