IRS finally raised the standard mileage rate for 2011 to reflect rising fuel prices! Effective July 1, 2011, standard mileage rate will increase from 51 cents per mile to 55.5 cents per mile for business use.

If you made energy efficient improvements to your home, you may qualify for a tax credit. The purchase of high efficiency appliances such as ACs, hot water heaters, windows, and doors may apply for a credit equal to 30% of the purchase price up to $1500.

Even if you don't itemize your deductions, you may still be eligible to take a sales tax deduction for the purchase of a new vehicle before January 1, 2010. Complete Schedule L with your return to take this deduction.

Did you know that contributions to Haiti relief efforts made prior to March 1, 2010 can be deducted on your 2009 tax return? Only cash contributions qualify, not tangible goods. This includes contributions made by text message, check, and credit cards. Keep your acknowledgement receipt. And make sure you don't take the same deduction on your 2010 tax return.

Most taxpayers have heard of the homebuyers tax credit. But did you know that you may also qualify if you have owned your current home for at least 5 years and buy a new principal residence? The new credit ends April 30, so check with you CPA soon to see if you qualify.

Expanded rules for education credits may allow individuals to qualify for this credit even though they didn't in previous years. The American Opportunity Credit now helps pay for the first four years of college, including not only tuition, but also books and supplies. Check with your CPA to see if you qualify

Are you expecting a big refund this tax season? As excited as you may be about that, keep this in mind. You've just given the IRS an interest free loan for a year. Could you have saved that money yourself and earned a little interest? If so, consider changing your exemptions on your W-4 and reduce the amount of taxes being withheld each pay period.

Employers, remember that you must prepare your W-2s and send them to employees by February 1, 2010. Here's a tip... give your employees time to notify you of address changes or corrections to their social security number before you mail Copy A to the social security administration. Copy A doesn't have to be mailed until March 1, 2010.

Business owners, do you track your business mileage like you should? IRS regulations require you to keep a log of all business mileage. Keep the log in your car for easy access. Once you get in the habit, it'll be second nature. FYI, standard mileage rate for 2010 is 50 cents per mile.

For individuals, your fourth estimated tax payment is due on January 15th, 2010. Remember, to avoid a penalty, you should make a safe harbor estimate, either 100% of prior year or 90% of current year estimate.

It's officially tax season! Start collecting those W-2s and 1099s. For safe keeping, place a file folder in a secure location and as you receive those year end documents, put them all in that file folder. When it's time to meet with your CPA, all your documents will be in one place.
