When building a business budget, get yourself in a flexible frame of mind. Setting a budget, say for a year at a time, that you're unwilling to tweak could be a detriment to your finances, rather than the help that's intended.

Look over your budget monthly with your team, and be willing to make smart changes, based on the expenses and income your company is looking at -- particularly by taking a realistic look at your sales predictions. How much will you really be bringing in over the coming month?

When it come to personal budgeting, tips and tricks abound. If it's sticking to your budget that is your personal budget pitfall, then the envelope system might be for you.

This strategy makes all your spending cash ONLY. At the beginning of the month, you withdraw *only* the cash you'll need for each of your budget categories, and spend from that. Once the cash is gone, your spending ability is too.

If you've got a success story with this method, we'd love to hear it!

May we make a suggestion? Instead of picking a brand new, shiny toy to buy with that proverbial "wad of cash," consider your financial picture as a whole. Is there a move you could make with this money that would benefit you in the long run? A few ideas:

- Make an extra mortgage payment
- Pay down your student loans
- Set aside what you'll need to pay your property tax at the end of the year

BREAKING NEWS: The IRS' technical systems went down early today, their busiest day of the year. All taxpayers have automatically received an extension of the deadline (to file and pay). Returns are now due by midnight TOMORROW, April 18, due to the system outage.

Their systems are back online, and all electronic filings and payments should be a go.

While next Tuesday (the 17th) is on every taxpayer's mind as the deadline for individual tax return filing, businesses need to remember that their first quarterly payment of estimated taxes for 2018 is also due that day.

04/11/2018

Most people are counting down the days, once their return is filed, to when their refund money lands in their bank account. The IRS advises that most refunds are issued within 3 weeks (if you e-file, and opt for direct deposit). It's possible for it to take a bit longer, but for the most part, under 21 days is what you can expect.

Deadline alert: April 1 is the last day for most retirees who turned 70.5 in 2017 to take a required minimum distribution (RMD) from IRAs and employee-sponsored retirement programs.

If you haven't already gotten this disbursement, this is the week to make a few calls and be sure it's setup to come to you by Sunday.

03/23/2018

If you haven't filed your taxes yet...well, first of all, give us a call because time is running short.

If you haven't filed yet, now is the moment to take stock of the forms you've received from employers. You need to have a W-2 from *every* business you worked for as an employee in 2017, even it was only for a short time. If you worked as an independent contractor and made more than $600, you should have a 1099 form from each of those income sources.

If you don't have those important documents in your hands yet, then you need to call your employers and get a copy, ASAP. You can call us in the meantime to get the preparation process started, but we'll need those forms to be able to finish.

When you provide us your financial information for filing your taxes, how much you put into your retirement accounts is an important piece of info we'll need to know.

This is because there's a nifty credit (that's right - credit, not a deduction. You get money back here even if you owe the IRS nothing) available for those who contributed to eligible accounts. The amount of the credit varies based on your income and filing status - it's geared to encourage those of all income brackets to contribute towards retirement. If you make less than $62,000 (Married Filing Jointly) or $31,000 (Single), then this is for you.

And here's a tip: you can make contributions to said retirement account all the way up to April 17 and have them count towards your 2017 contributions.

Trying to recall what you spent on deductible business expenses over the past year can be a stressful part of business tax filing. If you're running up against that wall, let it inspire you to think up a recording system for this coming year. If you track your deductible costs as you pay them, return time will be much easier (and likely more profitable)!

We're already on top of things for our clients, but this is a quick reminder to you to make sure that we've communicated, and that your books don't contain any "hanging chads" that might come back to bite you.
