Saving more is great… but where you save matters too.

A lot of people focus on maxing out their 401(k) and stop there. But if everything is sitting in tax-deferred accounts, future income could be more exposed to whatever tax rates look like down the road. πŸ’Έ

That’s where tax diversification comes in. Having a mix of different account types can give you more control when it’s time to use your money.

Because it’s not just about building wealth. It’s about how you access it later.

Losing a spouse changes everything β€” and finances rarely adjust the way people expect.

Here are the three biggest myths that catch surviving spouses off guard:

Myth #1: "Expenses will go down." Often, they go up. The lawn the husband mowed now costs $150 a month. The repairs, handyman work, and household tasks one spouse handled for free now come with an invoice. The mortgage and utilities don't shrink either.

Myth #2: "Taxes will stay about the same." Not even close. It's called the Widow's Tax β€” and it's the most underestimated cost of losing a spouse. The same income gets pushed into single-filer brackets, the standard deduction is cut in half, and many surviving spouses owe thousands more each year.

Myth #3: "Income will stay close to what it was." Hardly ever. The lower Social Security benefit disappears entirely. If a pension didn't elect survivorship, that income vanishes with it. The drop is almost always steeper than couples imagine.

This is why we run a Survivorship Income Analysis for every couple we work with. We show you, in real numbers, what the surviving spouse's income would actually be β€” so there are no surprises. Once we see the gap, we build the plan to close it.

Don't let your family find this out the hard way.

Roth conversions can offer long-term tax advantages, but how you pay the taxes matters.

⚠️ If you’re under age 59Β½ and use funds from your retirement account to cover the tax bill, the IRS may treat that as an early distribution. That can result in an unexpected 10% penalty.

Many people don’t realize this because the funds may never pass through their hands directly. But from a tax standpoint, it still counts.

Being aware of this detail can help you structure conversions more effectively and avoid surprises. πŸ‘Œ

Today, we remember.

Memorial Day is a time to honor the heroes who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice is something we carry with us not just today, but always.

Wishing everyone a meaningful Memorial Day as we take time to reflect and pay our respects.

There’s something grounding about being surrounded by nature β€” a reminder that not every step has to be rushed, and some views are worth stopping for.

Retirement planning becomes a lot less intimidating when it’s personalized.

πŸŽ₯ April recently joined 11Alive to discuss why retirement savings goals continue to rise and why broad headlines don’t tell the whole story.

Yes, inflation matters.
Yes, people are living longer.

But that doesn’t mean everyone needs the exact same number to retire comfortably...

The real starting point is understanding what retirement may realistically look like for your life and your spending habits. πŸ’

Many people believe once they create a will, their estate plan is complete. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

πŸ‘‰ A large percentage of Americans don’t have any plan in place at all. And even when the documents exist, problems can arise if beneficiary forms haven’t been updated or if family members don’t know where important documents are kept.

Estate planning is really about making sure everything works together and stays up to date as life changes.

Who handles the finances in your household? πŸ‘«

For many couples, it’s one person. But if the other spouse isn’t involved at all, it can create challenges later on.

Even just being part of the conversation can go a long way in building confidence and preparedness.

If you’re ready to get both partners more involved, give our team a call to schedule a visit:

Armed Forces Day is dedicated to honoring members of the United States military who serve and protect our country every day.

Behind every service member is a story of commitment, and often a family that shares in that sacrifice. Today is an opportunity to pause, reflect, and express gratitude to those who continue to serve.

Thank you to the brave individuals protecting our nation. πŸ™

In many households, one spouse ends up handling most of the financial accounts.

That may work just fine day to day. But if something unexpected happens, the other spouse could suddenly find themselves without an established credit history and that can make things difficult. ⚠️

One simple way to help protect both partners is to make sure each spouse has some credit history in their own name. That might mean being listed on a mortgage or loan, putting certain household bills under each person’s name, or alternating who takes out a car loan.

πŸ’› These small steps today can make a big difference in protecting a surviving spouse in the future. To learn more about how thoughtful planning can help protect your family, visit the link in our bio.
