This Friday, March 27th, we are celebrating two very different kinds of legends. One who can dance like nobody’s watching, and one who will stop at nothing to conquer the Pacific Northwest.

7:00 PM – Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
Gosh! It’s the cult classic that taught us about ligers, glamor shots, and the importance of voting for Pedro. Relive every awkward moment and iconic dance move on the big screen. Feel free to bring your own tater tots (but only if you have enough to share)!

9:00 PM – The Big Trees (1952)
Kirk Douglas stars as a ruthless timber baron who meets his match in a group of Quakers determined to protect the giant Redwoods. It’s a beautifully shot, Technicolor adventure about greed, redemption, and the majesty of nature.

RIVOLI TRIVIA:
Napoleon Dynamite: Jon Heder was only paid $1,000 to star in the original film! Luckily, after it became a global sensation, he was able to renegotiate for a much larger "piece of the pie."

The Big Trees: This was actually Kirk Douglas's final film for Warner Bros. He famously agreed to do it for free just so the studio would release him from his contract early!

The Princess Bride: In the famous scene where Westley and Buttercup are in the Fire Swamp, the "Flame Spurt" actually set Robin Wright’s dress on fire for real! She stayed completely calm and finished the take like a pro, which is the version you see in the movie.

Angel on My Shoulder: Claude Rains plays the Devil (Nick) in this film. He was so good at playing sophisticated, charming villains that he actually played a similar "heavenly" authority figure just a few years earlier in Here Comes Mr. Jordan. He was the master of the afterlife!

An '80s underdog story meets a 1930s pulp classic this Friday at the Rivoli!

Whether they are mastering ancient martial arts or lurking in the shadows to stop crime, this Friday’s heroes defy the odds.

7:00 PM – The Karate Kid (1984)
It’s the classic underdog story that defined a generation. When Daniel LaRusso moves to Southern California, he becomes the target of high school bullies. Enter the soft-spoken Mr. Miyagi, who agrees to teach him karate, leading to one of the most memorable martial arts films ever made. It’s got the music, the moves, and the spirit of "wax on, wax off."

9:00 PM – The Shadow Strikes (1937)
"Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?" Rod La Rocque stars as Lamont Cranston (aka The Shadow), based on the incredibly popular pulp magazine and radio character. In this mystery, the Shadow must navigate a dangerous estate full of murder, intrigue, and deception to find the real killer. Classic pulp noir!

TRIVIA TIME:
In The Karate Kid, the infamous and devastating "crane kick" that Daniel uses in the final tournament was actually not based on a real, traditional karate technique; it was invented specifically for the movie to look spectacular on camera!
