Getting 5,000+ views on a reel is cute... but knowing which product/service has the best profit margin is waaay cooler! 😎

For small businesses who want to work less and earn more, the answer isn't always trying to fit more clients/bookings/orders/etc. into your already booked-out calendar.

In my humble opinion (as a bookkeeper who works with successful businesses every day), it looks more like:

→ Knowing which services/products have the best margins

→ Automating any and every repeatable process in your business that you can

→ Understanding which marketing channels are actually bringing in the $$$ paying clients

→ Outsourcing when it costs you more in time + money to do a task yourself

→ Having clients who tell everyone they know about your business because of your insanely good customer experience

Sometimes being choosier with clients/projects, tightening up workflows, and knowing your numbers is all you need to level up your business. 🙂↕️

I'm not going to sugarcoat the things you truly need to know about your business!

I love being the bearer of great news, like "yes, you can totally afford to pay yourself more!"...

But I'm also not scared to tell you to put that credit card DOWN!

Either way, I'm running the numbers so that my clients don't run their businesses based on guestimates anymore. 🔢

To say I've experienced some character development over the past 8.5 years of being a accountant would be an understatement...

My dream used to be to climb the ranks in corporate as far as possible. Be a senior staff accountant, maybe even a controller one day.

But I was never meant for that. Now, I just want to be a present mom while still having the opportunity to provide for my family.

If you sell taxable goods or services (something you need to check in ALL the states you do business in, btw), this post is for you! 🫵

That money you collect as sales tax on each sale isn't actually money you've earned.

It needs to get remitted back to your tax authority at some point, so you don't want to treat it the same as your income.

Usually, the best treatment is to record the sales tax you collect as a current liability!

My first thought when I get a text like this from a small business owner?

THANK YOUUUU for letting me know! 🙏

Because you texted me, I can make a note in your file of the exact date your personal charge happened.

Then, when I go to do your bookkeeping next month, I don't have to bother asking you about that random Whole Foods expense... 🥖

I already know that it needs to be reclassified!

Don't panic if you accidentally put a personal expense on your business card (or vice versa), just let me know so I can make sure everything gets recorded correctly. 📚

COMMON MISCONCEPTION ↓

Your bookkeeping isn't done when you've cleared out all of your uncategorized expenses.

Once everything is entered and categorized in your books, you've got one *crucial* step left...

Reconciling! 🔁

Basically, this step is where you check your work. Reconciling catches mistakes like missing transactions, typos, or duplicates.

When you've reconciled each transaction and have a $0 difference? That's when you're officially done!

If you aren't reconciling, you risk letting mistakes snowball into MUUCH bigger problems.
