Everyone wants to lower their tax billโ€”and legitimate business deductions are an important part of that.

But here's what many business owners don't realize...

Your tax return isn't just reviewed by the IRS.

Lenders, banks, and mortgage companies often use your tax return to evaluate your income when you're applying for financing, purchasing a home, or securing a business loan.

The more deductions you claim, the lower your taxable income may appear on paper.

That's why tax planning isn't just about maximizing deductionsโ€”it's about aligning your tax strategy with your business and personal goals.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Are you planning to apply for financing or purchase a home in the next year? If so, now is the time to start planningโ€”not after your tax return is filed.

Your tax return should support your goals, not unintentionally create obstacles.

Everyone loves finding another tax deductionโ€”and I do too. But some of the biggest tax savings don't come from write-offs. They come from making the right strategic decisions.

One of those decisions is choosing the right business entity.

As your business grows, it may be time to evaluate whether an S corporation election makes sense. For some business owners, it can reduce self-employment taxes and create meaningful tax savings.

That said, an S corporation isn't a tax hack or the right fit for every business. It also comes with additional responsibilities like payroll, tax filings, and ongoing compliance.

That's why tax planning should always be based on your business goalsโ€”not just what's trending on social media.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Has your business entity been reviewed recently, or are you still operating under the structure you chose when you first started?

The best tax strategy is one that's tailored to your businessโ€”not someone else's.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that tax planning happens during tax season.

In reality, some of the best tax planning happens in the middle of the yearโ€”when there's still time to make meaningful decisions before December 31.

A mid-year tax planning session can help you:

โœ”๏ธ Estimate your tax liability before year-end.

โœ”๏ธ Identify opportunities to maximize deductions and available tax credits.

โœ”๏ธ Evaluate retirement contribution strategies.

โœ”๏ธ Confirm you're staying compliant with federal, state, and local tax requirements.

Tax planning isn't just about reducing taxes. It's about giving yourself time to make informed decisions instead of reacting after the year is over.

๐Ÿ’ฌ If you'd like to learn more about our Summer Tax Planning Sessions, send me a message. I'd be happy to share what's included and help you determine if it's a good fit for your situation.

The best financial decisions are rarely made at the last minute. A little planning today can make a meaningful difference tomorrow.

One of the questions I get from business owners is, "What's the best way to keep track of my receipts?"

My answer is simple: Use a system you'll actually stick with.

A few budget-friendly options I recommend include:

โœ”๏ธ Google Drive folders organized by month

โœ”๏ธ A dedicated "Receipts" folder in your email

โœ”๏ธ Taking a photo of paper receipts as soon as you receive them

If you're one of our bookkeeping clients, we also provide a secure way for you to upload receipts throughout the month, making month-end much easier.

The best receipt system isn't necessarily the fanciestโ€”it's the one you'll use consistently.

It happens more often than you might think.

Whether it's groceries, gas, or another personal expense, the most helpful thing you can do is let your bookkeeper know as soon as possible.

A quick message allows us to document the transaction while it's still fresh, so when it's time to reconcile your books, we already know exactly how it should be handled.

That means:
โœ”๏ธ Less back-and-forth later.
โœ”๏ธ More accurate financial records.
โœ”๏ธ One less thing for you to remember at month-end.

Mistakes happen. Good bookkeeping is about catching them and recording them correctlyโ€”not pretending they never happened.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Have you ever accidentally used the wrong card for a purchase? Trust me...you're not the only one.

Clear communication makes for cleaner books.

Iโ€™m all for personality in businessโ€ฆ

โ€ฆbut your chart of accounts probably isnโ€™t the best place for it.

A few things I see far too often:

โ†’ Multiple versions of the same category
(โ€œOffice Expense,โ€ โ€œOffice Expenses,โ€ โ€œOfficeโ€)

โ†’ โ€œPersonal Expensesโ€ sitting inside business books instead of being properly reclassified

โ†’ Overcomplicated subaccounts that create more confusion than clarity

โ†’ Account names that only make sense to the person who created them

Your chart of accounts isnโ€™t just a list.

Itโ€™s the foundation of your financial reporting.

And when itโ€™s inconsistent or unclear, it becomes much harder to trust the numbers youโ€™re using to make business decisions.

Most growing businesses donโ€™t need more complicated reports.

They need cleaner financial structure underneath them.

No judgment โ€” but itโ€™s absolutely something worth fixing.

If you traveled for work this summer, your receipts matter more than you think.

Hereโ€™s what to make sure youโ€™re keeping track of:

๐Ÿงพ Flights, trains, rideshares, rental cars
๐Ÿงพ Hotels, Airbnbs, Vrbos
๐Ÿงพ Parking + tolls
๐Ÿงพ Meals while traveling
๐Ÿงพ Conference fees or event tickets
๐Ÿงพ In-flight WiFi and other travel expenses

These costs can add up quicklyโ€”and when properly documented, they can meaningfully reduce your tax bill.

The key isnโ€™t just spendingโ€”itโ€™s tracking and categorizing correctly.

When in doubt, keep the receipt. Itโ€™s much easier to sort through later than to try to recreate it at tax time.

I can tell a lot about a business just by looking at the books.

More than most owners expect.

Sometimes the story is strongโ€”clear growth, consistent cash flow, intentional decisions.
Other times, it highlights the things that have been pushed off for a little too long.

And to be clearโ€”I see this in new client books all the time.
Thereโ€™s zero judgment here.

But there is a pattern:

The longer bookkeeping issues go unaddressed, the more complexโ€”and expensiveโ€”they become.

Clean, current financials donโ€™t just keep you organized.
They give you control.

Bookkeeping support is not just about whether you can categorize transactions yourself.

Many business owners can manage the basics.

But as the business grows, the better question becomes:

Is this still the best use of your time?

Your books should help you understand:
โ€ข what your business earned
โ€ข what your business spent
โ€ข whether your pricing still makes sense
โ€ข whether cash flow is improving or getting tight
โ€ข whether you are setting aside enough for taxes

That matters.

Because bookkeeping is not just a task to complete before tax season.

It is part of how you make informed business decisions throughout the year.

And if your books are behind, unclear, or only reviewed when it is time to file, it may be time to put the right support in place.

๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿพ Sole Proprietors & Single-Member LLC Business Owners... this one's for you.

I've seen this mistake come up several times recently.

If you're a sole proprietor or single-member LLC taxed as a sole proprietorship, you generally shouldn't be paying yourself through W-2 payroll. Instead, you typically pay yourself through an owner's draw.

In this video, I cover:
โ€ข Why this mistake happens
โ€ข What an owner's draw is
โ€ข Common bookkeeping mistakes to avoid
โ€ข Tips for paying yourself the right way

One important note: This applies to sole proprietors and single-member LLCs taxed as sole proprietorships. If you've elected S corporation status, the rules are different.
