YES - full stop.

If you’re working with a tax preparer, they need to have their Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN).

According to the IRS, “Anyone who prepares or assists in preparing federal tax returns for compensation must have a valid 2024 PTIN before preparing returns. All enrolled agents must also have a valid PTIN.”

If you’re paying someone to do your taxes, you need to make sure you know they have a PTIN. Don’t be afraid to ask for proof - or verify here: https://irs.treasury.gov/rpo/rpo.jsf.

Also, if they don’t have an EFIN (verify here https://www.irs.gov/e-file-providers/authorized-irs-e-file-provider-locator-service-for-tax-professionals) they cannot e-file your return; so they are essentially preparing and filing as you…don’t pay someone else to use TurboTax in your name! The irs will not care if you let Cousin Betty do your return if it’s your name on it when they come for you in an audit! Make sure your preparer has their credentials 🥰🥰🎉🎉
