How does debt get written off?
Prescription
If a creditor doesn't take legal action to collect a debt within a certain time period, the debt is considered prescribed. This time period is called the prescription period.
Reckless lending
If a creditor gives credit without properly assessing the borrower's ability to pay, or if the borrower doesn't understand the terms of the agreement, the debt may be written off.
