Grow Programme open to applications from artisans looking to upscale their business.

Qualified artisans (with trade tests) in the construction sector between the ages of 18and 49 can apply to level up their businesses and gain access to funding through the Artisan Venture Hub’s newly launched Grow Programme.
Applications for the programme close on March 31. Artisans in the construction sector include bricklayers, plumbers, electricians and carpenters.
The Artisan Venture Hub’s Grow Programme is a ten-monthbusiness development initiative that will run from mid-April to
February next year.
Delivered in partnership with the FEM Education Foundation, it is designed to strengthen and scale artisan-owned businesses operating in the construction sector.
The programme targets owner-managed enterprises that have been operating for at least two years and employ a minimum of two full-time staff members.
Eligible businesses must operate in Gauteng, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga or Limpopo, and have a yearly turnover of between R600 000 and R5-million.
To qualify, businesses must be formally registered with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission, have valid tax clearance, and operate an active business bank account.
While not mandatory, liability insurance, Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act registration, and an occupational health and safety file will be considered advantageous during the selection process.
“The Grow Programme recognises that many artisan entrepreneurs have built viable businesses, but require structured support to refine systems, improve operational efficiency and strengthen long-term profitability,” says Allan Gray Makers programme director Seth Mulli. The Artisan Venture Hub is an initiative of philanthropic entity Allan Gray Makers.

Each participating business will undergo a comprehensive business assessment to evaluate current performance, operational
processes and growth constraints. This diagnostic process will inform the development of a personalised business development plan tailored to each enterprise’s specific needs.
“Through this structured support, participants will receive guidance to improve business operations and management practices, strengthen financial performance, and position their enterprises for sustainable expansion and job creation,” says Mulli.
Participants will also gain access to market opportunities and the Imara Artisan SMME Fund, enabling qualifying businesses to explore funding solutions aligned to their growth trajectory.

We would like to take this opportunity to highlight the CIPC - Companies and Intellectual Property Commission requirements for companies regarding the difference between a company's financial year end, and the company's anniversary date.

On the eve of what is the financial year end of many companies (the end of February) we remind our clients that the financial year end of a company signifies the annual cut-off date to record transactions and to determine the profits and losses of the company for the year then ended. This date is normally chosen to coincide with the trading cycle of the company, so that the owners can review the success of their trading operations for the past year.

However, when a company is registered the date of registration is normally on a completely different date than the financial year end date. But this date is "celebrated" by CIPC and is the anniversary date of the registration of the company. The significance of this date is that within a month after the anniversary date of the company's registration the company should submit an annual return to CIPC, and update or submit its Beneficial Ownership Register. The Annual Return is to show CIPC that the company is still active and a levy is paid to CIPC which is based on the Annual Turnover of the company for the previous year end. The Beneficial Ownership Register requires the company to disclose the natural person who benefits from holding an interest in the company, or who controls the company. It was introduced to fulfil in the country's quest to improve its ratings with regards to financial risks and general trading risks impacted on by things such as money laundering, tax evasion, transparency, and combatting crime and terrorism. This is to satisfy the recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force that was responsible for grey-listing the country as a bad investment prospect.

Nonetheless, it is essential for companies to submit these CIPC returns otherwise the company can be deregistered. As the owner of a company it is therefore important for you to keep this important date also in mind and to submit the returns on time to avoid penalties.
