Tax deadline reminder: Friday, 23 October 2026

If you're a non-provisional taxpayer and SARS didn't auto-assess you, your 2026 tax return is due by Friday, 23 October 2026. That's only 8 days away.

✔ Who must file by 23 October: Non-provisional taxpayers, mostly salaried individuals, who were not auto-assessed. If you were auto-assessed and agree with the outcome, you don't need to do anything.

✔ Late penalties: If you miss the deadline, SARS can charge a fixed penalty of R250 to R16,000 per month, depending on your taxable income. It keeps recurring until the return is submitted, for up to 35 months.

✔ Provisional taxpayers: If you earn income other than a salary, such as from a business, rental or investments, you have until 22 January 2027. If SARS auto-assessed you and you disagree, you can amend and submit by the same date.

✔ Trusts: Trust returns (ITR12T) are due by 22 January 2027. Remember to include the trust's beneficial ownership information.

Don't leave it until the last day, because eFiling gets very busy close to the deadline. Let FDT Financial Architects help you get your return in on time.

Travelling soon? SARS now requires every traveller to declare online before crossing the border.

The SARS Traveller Management System (SATMS) is the new online system for customs declarations. Here's what you need to know:

✔ Who: Everyone entering or leaving South Africa by air, land, sea or rail. That includes SA citizens, residents, visitors, children and infants. A parent or guardian can submit for a minor.

✔ When: Submit no more than 24 hours before you depart. If your trip has stops, the 24 hours count from the last leg to South Africa.

✔ How: On the SARS Customs Online Traveller Declaration page, the free SATMS app (Google, Apple and Huawei stores), the SARS MobiApp, or by scanning a QR code at the port of entry.

✔ What to declare: Goods above your duty-free allowance, commercial goods, and cash or bearer negotiable instruments above the legal limit. Everyday personal items don't need to be declared.

✔ Foreign-registered vehicles: Since 1 June 2026, these must be declared too, including vehicles registered in Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and eSwatini. Take a certified copy of the registration papers, and the bank's or owner's written permission if applicable.

Keep your SARS confirmation on your phone or printed out for the border. If you don't declare, or declare incorrectly, you could face delays, goods being held or penalties.

🚨 ATTENTION BUSINESS OWNERS! 🚨
Is your business making R1 million or more in turnover over any 12-month period (not just a financial year)? Or do you expect to hit that target soon?

💥 If yes — your business must be registered for VAT with SARS.
This is not optional. It's a legal requirement under South African tax law.

🔍 Don't wait until it's too late. Get compliant, avoid penalties, and keep your business on the right side of the law.

✅ Already there or getting close? It’s time to register for VAT.
