When people divorce, most of the focus goes on the family home.
Very little attention is paid to pensions.
Yet for many British expats in their 40s and 50s, a UK pension may be one of the largest assets they have built up.
Over the years, I have seen pensions traded away in order to keep the house, without fully understanding what that means for retirement. The real cost often shows up much later.
Divorce is emotional. But pension decisions last for decades.
In this weekโs Financial Fridays post, I explain how pensions are dealt with in England and Wales, and why expats need to approach this carefully.
It is worth a quick read if you or someone you know may be affected.
