We’re good. But we’re not magicians.

We can’t pull together a great tax return from a shoebox of receipts, a rough guess at your kms, and a side hustle you forgot to mention. And with the ATO paying closer attention than ever this year, work expenses, investments, undeclared income the stakes of showing up unprepared are higher than they used to be.

The good news is it doesn’t take much to get it right. Just knowing what to bring and what your accountant actually needs from you before you walk in the door.

So we made you a checklist. Income, deductions, super, investments, side hustles, it’s all in there.

Free, in our bio. Download it before your next appointment, you’re accountant will thank you for it.

Does this sound like you? It might be time to speak to an accountant. And don’t worry, the first coffee is on us 😉

Some tax claims are getting a lot more attention from the ATO this year. And a lot of them are things that show up in everyday returns.

On the radar: lifestyle assets, Division 7A, rental property deductions, motor vehicle claims, working from home expenses, GST reporting and cryptocurrency transactions.

If you’re running a business, GST reporting and Division 7A are worth paying particular attention to. Small oversights in these areas can turn into big headaches quickly.

None of these are red flags on their own. It almost always comes back to records and whether the expense genuinely connects to earning income.

If something sits in a grey area, that’s the conversation to have with your accountant before you lodge. Not after.

Super is changing on July 1 📆

And if you’re not yet across it, save this post or schedule a chat with your accountant to get up to speed with what is changing and what it means for you.

Contribution caps are going up from $30,000 to $32,500 per financial year.

Super balance under $500k? You may be able to use unused caps from the previous five years, allowing for a higher total contribution.

If you are salary sacrificing, it is worth reviewing your arrangements now to make the most of these new limits.

If you’re an employer, this one is on you too. Super guarantee contributions need to reflect the new rates from 1 July. If your payroll isn’t updated before then, you risk underpaying super, and that’s something the ATO takes seriously.

Not sure what this means for you or how to make the most of it?

That’s all that’s standing between you and June 30.

The only difference between a stressful EOFY and a smooth one? starting now.

The business owners who are working smarter are doing this now, not the week before June 30...

✔ Getting records and receipts in order.

✔ Reviewing income and expenses before it’s too late to do anything about them.

✔ Locking in time with their accountant before the diary fills up

✔ Making strategic decisions purchases, super, structure, while there’s still time to act.

Most business owners don’t get it right the first time... or the second.

It’s usually a lot of trial, a few wrong calls, and figuring things out as you go.

Failing isn’t the problem, it’s usually where the learning actually happens.

The ones that make progress are just the ones who keep showing up and adjusting.

When you’re running your own business, planning for tax needs to be built into your processes.

A good rule of thumb:

- 20% for tax

- Another 10% (if you’re registered for GST)

Set it up to go into a separate account so it’s not sitting there to be spent. It doesn’t have to be complicated, but having the right setup makes a big difference.

If you’re not sure you’re doing it properly, it’s always worth having a conversation with the right people.

If your business feels busy but not quite working… this might be why.

Some financial red flags are easy to miss, and they usually start small… until they don’t.

Chasing cash flow, not knowing your numbers, or feeling like nothing’s really left at the end, that’s not failure. It’s feedback. And it’s usually a sign something needs attention.

The good news? With the right structure and support, it’s all fixable.

If this sounds familiar, it’s worth having the conversation.

Client highlight:

Tiny House on the Prairie is a hidden gem in Cudlee Creek, offering accommodation, weddings and private functions, all set on a private property surrounded by natural bushland.

With a lake stretching across the venue and wide open space to work with, it’s the kind of place that feels a long way from suburbia, without actually being far from it.

When it's sitting in your account, it's easy to forget that GST is not actually your money.

Our advice? Set up a separate account dedicated to GST. That way, you always know what money you actually have available.
