WHY HEALTHCARE? David Dahm, CEO and Founder of Health and Life was impacted by a car accident that changed his life - In David's words;

"In one moment I had a terrible but positive life changing experience. On 8th July 1989 at 5:33am on a cold Tuesday morning, after working long hours as an accountant I feel asleep at the wheel of my car and crashed into a tree. Do you have to die before you can live? This did change my life and others like me who have had similar experience. Founder Steve Jobs from Apple has a similar story like many who have had a near death experience. Not that we recommend this is a way of finding your purpose!"

WHY THE HEALTHCARE PROFESSION? "Despite coming from a family of medicos, I felt ‘lost in the healthcare system’ and nine operations later in 1992 I founded Health and Life. Today the firm is a national, high profile accounting, tax and healthcare consulting firm for the healthcare industry and the community. Every person has a right to lead a free and self- fulfilled life. Through financial and health literacy, Health and Life’s vision is to help health professionals become empowered patient advocates. In a free society, the same freedom and access to the health system should be available to people from all walks of life. Every healthcare provider is in a unique position to touch the lives of every person to help them reach this goal. I believe in the timely delivery of health and financial literacy information to individuals so they can lead a self-fulfilled life. It only takes a moment to change some one’s life." WHY ARE WE UNIQUE? To our knowledge there is no other company offering the same range of services and support to doctors anywhere in Australia. Acknowledging that many owners in general do not have the business skills, time nor expertise to deal with the commercial realities that impact on their practice, our particular focus is on enabling hands-on management. Today, the healthcare profession is under more pressure than ever before. Medicare, third party payers, and computerised office systems are making the practice of medicine more and more complex. It's no secret that running a successful healthcare practice in the new millennium takes time and business expertise. Something a lot of owners just don't have and more importantly they are not trained for. And while they desperately try to juggle their dual roles of doctor and business person, their main asset - their patient base - suffers. All of this has a great impact on the bottom line. Current healthcare and taxation reforms threaten to reduce the viability and high quality of medical care in Australia forever. For doctors and dentists our key strategy is to ethically and legally use the healthcare reforms to the advantage of their professions. We have identified the areas that generate the greatest problems in a medical practice and developed solutions to yield the greatest benefits. You may choose to have us provide a single or total package. We offer a total support network for your practice - reducing non-chargeable hours, wastage and accountancy fees, to increasing your fee base, productivity and quality of service. This all adds up to a healthier profit for you and a better service to your patients. We have also developed a unique payroll program called the Doctors’ Pay Calculator, which simplifies legal, tax and accounting compliance for employers. We understand the day to day practice management problems. Are we what you are looking for?

Uber court ruling exposes GPs to massive tax bills, bulk-billing at risk
I was honoured to be interviewed in today national Australian news paper as a specialist medical accountant on the critical issue of compliance for medical practices and how to legally avoid paying payroll tax by ensuring your properly classifying your business.
I urged practice managers to always double-check their compliance positions:
For those unable to access the article, here are some of key quotes doctors have picked up on...
“They need to really get a second opinion because they could be falsely misclassifying themselves … and they could find themselves paying all this payroll tax and back taxes,” he said.
“It really is putting the medical and healthcare industry on notice that they need to look in their own back garden, because what the judges are saying is if you look like a duck and sound like a duck, and the evidence shows that, you’re going to be eligible for payroll tax.
“You’re opening yourselves up for a bit of a fight with the tax man that is avoidable purely due to a misunderstanding, which clearly a lot of lawyers and accountants in Australia have not been clear on themselves.”
With record numbers of GPs set to retire in the coming years, Mr Dahm said increasingly onerous tax obligations would push young doctors away from setting up their own clinics.
“We need to build structural capability and a succession plan for the next generation of doctors, and it’s not being handled properly now. If people think this is a cacophony of tax laws that are so complicated that they can’t be solved, then we’ve got a real problem,” he said.“
