Meet Chris Martain, one of our Auditors.

When Chris isn't out visiting clients across the regions, you'll likely find him enjoying a barbecue with family and friends, playing or watching footy, fitting in a round of golf, or exploring some of the unique places his role takes him.

One achievement he's particularly proud of is making Curtin University's Vice Chancellor's List while completing his degree, and he enjoys helping clients through the audit process with a practical, approachable style.

Say hello to Chris in the comments! đź‘‹

What a month July has been!

From our Beans & Brag coffee catch-ups to cheering on the Albany Basketball Association during the NBL1 West Indigenous Rounds, we've loved getting involved with our team and the local community. We also welcomed Jo Klap from Triple Loop for a full-team workshop on adaptability, communication and change management, and Bec headed to the Gold Coast for the launch of WWA's inaugural NextGen Program.

We brought a little Christmas spirit into the office too, shared plenty of laughs and enjoyed the everyday moments that make Lincolns a great place to work.

Thanks to everyone who helped make July such a memorable month.

Your family business probably didn't look the same five years ago. Chances are, it won't look the same five years from now either.

As businesses grow, roles evolve, new generations become involved and important decisions become more frequent. Having a clear framework can make those decisions easier for everyone involved.

If you've started recognising some of the signs in this checklist, our upcoming Family Charter webinar is a great place to learn more.

Kym answers the 3 Questions Family Businesses Often Avoid Asking
Question 1:
“Why am I not being paid the same as someone doing the same job?”
In family businesses, what you get paid may not always align with “market value”. This could be because there are other costs being covered by the business, you are paid drawings instead of wages or a number of other factors. The issue is that when the understanding around how someone is paid isn’t discussed openly, it can lead to frustration, resentment and assumptions. Do they need to understand the difference between drawings and wages? Do they need to be shown their “full package” considering the costs covered by the business that normally wouldn’t be?
Question 2:
“What do I need to do to take on more responsibility in the business?”
Many next-generation family members want greater involvement but aren’t sure what the pathway looks like. Likewise, senior generations may not have clearly articulated what they’re looking for before handing over responsibility. A family charter can step through what this pathway looks like and the milestones expected along the way.
Question 3:
“When will my spouse or partner be included in important family and business conversations?”
Partners are often deeply impacted by family business decisions, yet they’re not always included in discussions about the future. This can create uncertainty, misunderstanding and tension. Within a family charter you can outline how and when people become part of conversations. This then makes it fair for any new entries to the family and is set out as a clear expectation from the start that doesn’t feel personal as the same rule applies to everyone.
