Did you know that unpaid tax debt can do more than drain your bank account, it could actually put your career at risk?

For professionals in regulated industries — think accountants, lawyers, financial advisers, mortgage brokers, and healthcare workers — a significant unresolved tax debt can attract attention from licensing bodies.

We're talking restrictions on your practice, required disclosures, or in serious cases, suspension of your licence.

We've written a plain-English guide covering what licensing bodies can do, what the ATO can do, and most importantly, how to protect yourself.

Worth a read if this is something you've been putting off. 👇

Planning a holiday?

Before you pack your bags, make sure your tax affairs are in order.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) can issue a Departure Prohibition Order (DPO) that prevents individuals with significant unpaid tax or superannuation debts from leaving Australia.

With more than $50 billion in outstanding tax debt, the ATO is increasingly using this power to enforce compliance.

Unresolved tax debts can result in unexpected travel disruption, including being stopped from boarding an international flight.

Small business owners, please be careful.

The ATO has flagged barter credit donation schemes as a compliance risk.

These arrangements often promise:

✔ Large tax deductions
✔ Minimal cash outlay
✔ “Guaranteed” tax savings

But if the deduction claimed is higher than what you actually paid, you could face:

➡️ Audits
➡️ Repayment of the deduction
➡️ Interest and penalties
➡️ Possible legal consequences

Even participating unknowingly does not protect you.

Owing tax doesn’t mean you’ve failed — but ignoring it can make things much worse.

ATO tax debt can grow quickly through interest, penalties and missed lodgements. The good news? Early action opens up options like payment plans that actually fit your cash flow.

The right steps now can:

✅ Stop the debt from escalating
✅ Reduce stress and uncertainty
✅ Protect your business from recovery action
✅ Help you stay compliant going forward

Staff gifts. Donations. Bonuses.
They all feel generous, but they’re not taxed the same way.

Before you spend:
✔ Know which donations reduce tax (and which don’t)
✔ Avoid FBT traps with employee gifts
✔ Use the $300 rule properly
✔ Choose between cash bonuses or non-cash rewards with confidence

A little clarity now can save a lot of stress later.

The ATO is tightening the rules on GST refunds.

From July 2025, refunds can be held for up to 30 days if your claim looks suspicious.

Even bookkeepers and friends who refer others can be held responsible.

Only claim what’s real. Keep your records clean. Ask questions if you’re unsure.

Think a “quick GST refund” sounds too good to be true? It probably is.

The ATO is sounding the alarm on GST refund fraud, and the numbers are staggering.

💰 Over $2 billion in fraudulent claims
👥 57,000+ individuals involved
⚖️ Jail sentences of up to 7 years have already handed down

Fake invoices and dummy ABNs might look clever, but they’re also criminal.

The ATO’s latest alert (TA 2025/2) makes it clear:
Even if you’re not the mastermind, if you're involved, you can be held accountable.

The ATO can delay suspicious GST refunds by up to 30 days to investigate. So make sure to:

✅ Only claim GST on legitimate business expenses
✅ Keep records and proof of payment
✅ Be wary of “low-risk” shortcuts doing the rounds online

If something feels off, a quick chat could save you from serious trouble. It's just not worth the risk.

Would you fall for this email? 👇
Looks legit? It’s not.

This scam email ticks all the red-flag boxes:

🚩 Fake domain (not ato.gov.au)
🚩 Generic greeting
🚩 Urgent tone (“respond within 48 hours”)
🚩 Link requesting personal or financial info

Scammers rely on fear or urgency to trick you.
Pause, breathe, and verify.

If you're unsure, contact your accountant or the ATO directly through official channels.
And never click on unexpected links.

Made a mistake on your tax return? Don’t panic, you can fix it.

The ATO allows amendments, but there are time limits, rules, and even opportunities to get money back if you’ve overpaid.

Here’s what you should know before making changes:

✅ You don’t need to re-lodge your whole return
✅ Sole traders now get 4 years (from 2024–25) to amend
✅ Fixes can work in your favour, not just against you
✅ Interest or penalties may still apply

Have you ever had to amend a return?

If you work from home, here’s a little bright spot to start your week.

The ATO has proposed an increase to the fixed rate method for claiming work-from-home expenses, from 67 cents to 70 cents per hour for the 2024–25 income year.

This can make a handy difference when you’re tallying up all those hours at the kitchen table or home office.

But a quick reminder:
✅ This method isn’t automatic.
✅ You must keep a detailed record of your hours worked from home, plus at least one bill or invoice for each expense type you’re claiming (electricity, internet, phone, etc.).

The fixed rate method is simple and often convenient, but it isn’t always the best option for everyone. The right approach depends on your circumstances and your record-keeping.

And while you’re thinking about deductions, a gentle nudge:

Tax returns for most individuals are due by 31 October.

If you’d like help deciding which method suits you best or making sure you have the right documentation lined up, just reach out.

My team and I here to help you maximise your claim and lodge with confidence.
