If you operate as a sole trader or in a partnership, your business income is generally treated as personal income for tax purposes.

This means you pay tax at individual income tax rates, and you may be entitled to the tax-free threshold depending on your total earnings.

However, once your business turnover reaches the current GST threshold (typically $75,000), you’re generally required to register for GST and charge 10% on taxable sales. This is reported through a Business Activity Statement (BAS) and is separate from your income tax return.

If you’re unsure about your obligations, it’s always best to get advice early.

With remote and hybrid work now a normal part of many Australian jobs, more people are claiming work-from-home expenses on tax returns.

If you work from home, there are two main methods you can use to claim deductions:

Fixed rate method
You can claim a set rate per hour worked from home to cover additional running expenses such as electricity, internet, phone usage, and stationery.

To use this method, you’ll need:

- A record of total hours worked from home
- Records showing work-related running expenses
- Documentation for any depreciating assets used for work

Actual cost method
This method allows you to claim the exact work-related portion of your expenses, based on detailed records.

You’ll need:

- A record of hours worked from home (either full-year records or a representative period if consistent)
- Receipts and bills for running expenses
- A clear calculation showing how the work-related portion was determined

The 1st of July marks the start of a new financial year in Australia, and this year brings new cost-of-living support designed to help working Australians keep more of what they earn.

As part of the 2026–27 Federal Budget, the Government is delivering a series of tax cuts and income support measures aimed at easing pressure on households and workers.

From 1 July 2026, key changes include:

- A reduction in the 16% tax rate (for income between $18,201 – $45,000) down to 15%, delivering an average tax cut of up to $268 per taxpayer
- Further staged tax relief continuing into 2027, increasing savings over time
- A new $1,000 instant tax deduction for work-related expenses, allowing many workers to reduce taxable income without needing receipts for claims up to this amount
- A new Working Australians Tax Offset (WATO) from 2027–28, providing an additional $250 annual tax offset for eligible workers

These measures form part of a broader cost-of-living package aimed at putting more money back into the pockets of around 13 million Australians and simplifying tax time for millions of workers.

Importantly, these changes apply to the current and future financial years, and do not affect prior year tax returns.

Depreciation is a way of spreading the cost of a business asset over its useful life, reflecting how its value decreases over time through use, wear and tear, or obsolescence.

When working out depreciation, key factors include:

Useful life: How long the asset is expected to generate value for your business
Depreciation method: Common approaches include straight-line and diminishing value methods
Annual calculation: The method chosen determines how much can be claimed each year

Correctly accounting for depreciation ensures your financial records reflect the true value of your business assets.

At The Bookkeeping Studio, we help make sense of the numbers so you can focus on running your business.
