⚠️ Proposed changes to discretionary trust taxation

The Federal Government has proposed changes that could affect how some discretionary trusts are taxed from 1 July 2028.

While these changes may impact family trusts, business structures and existing distribution strategies, it’s important to remember that the legislation is not yet finalised.

Our key message: don’t panic or restructure prematurely.

Walshs will continue to monitor the progress of the legislation and engage with our clients when the time is right.

A fantastic week in Cairns at the 2026 Australian Orthopaedic Association Annual Scientific Meeting! 👏

We were proud to see our Director Matthew Gellweiler represent the Bongiorno National Network on the Presidential Plenary panel, sharing a financial perspective on building wealth steadily and establishing strong foundations throughout a medical career.

It was also great to connect with the orthopaedic community, enjoy a little state rivalry and see the continued growth of the BNN across Australia.

We’re proud to support Walshs Director Peter Hodgson as he swaps the office for the outback and takes on the 2026 Mystery Box Rally with his dad, Peter Senior! 🚙🌵

Together, they’ll tackle around 2,500km of outback roads over five days in their 1997 Ford Falcon Ute, all in support of .

Peter and his dad are taking on the challenge in support of Megan Porter and in loving memory of Maree Burns, helping raise funds for vital cancer research, support services and programs for Australian families.

Simon Farmer and Nav Saini recently represented Walshs at the Preparation for Private Practice Workshop, supporting surgeons as they prepare for the transition into private practice.

The workshop brought together in-person and virtual attendees for a practical day covering the key considerations involved in establishing and running a private practice.

It was great to hear such positive feedback from the day, with attendees reporting a significant increase in confidence around running a private practice and strong value from the specialist advisers involved.

A big thank you to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons for having us, and to everyone who joined the session.

💳 Important ATO payment update.

From 1 December 2026, the ATO will no longer accept credit cards as a payment method, following changes to card payment costs and surcharging.

If you currently use a credit card to pay tax obligations, including through an existing payment plan, it’s worth reviewing your arrangements now. Taxpayers with a direct debit arrangement linked to a credit card will need to update their payment method before their first instalment due after 30 November.

Alternative payment options will remain available through the ATO.
