Resetting your mortgage to 30 years can feel like an easy fix when repayments are tight. It lowers your monthly outgoings, but it comes at a real cost.

On a $1 million loan at 6.25%, stretching from 25 to 30 years adds over $237,000 in extra interest. You also go back to paying mostly interest in the early years, build equity more slowly, and risk still having a mortgage in retirement.

There are other ways to ease the pressure first, an offset account, refinancing, interest-only periods, or a spending review, worth exploring before locking in a longer term.

Community Day: The Stream Financial Team gets their hands dirty!

This week, we swapped spreadsheets for shovels and headed out to give back to our beautiful Sunshine Coast community! Together, we planted, w**d matted, and staked 280 trees as part of the Doonan Planting Festival with Bushcare Sunshine Coast Council.

There's something pretty special about trading calculators for gardening gloves for a morning. Sore backs, muddy boots, and big smiles all round; 10/10 experience and we would recommend attending the festival if you have some time this week https://padlet.com/BushCareSC/doonan-planting-festival-bushcare-sunshine-coast-6zwd2tlb57kvfext

Earning a solid income but still feeling the pinch at the end of the month? You're not imagining it, and you're not alone.

It's called the middle-class squeeze. Households on respectable incomes that earn too much to qualify for government support, but are still feeling real pressure across housing, food, utilities, insurance, healthcare, and childcare.

According to the ABS, the average CPI over the year to March 2026 was 4.6%. Housing up 6.5%. Transport up 8.9%. And that's before lifestyle inflation quietly compounds things in the background.

The good news is that financial security is still very much within reach. It starts with understanding where the money is actually going, spotting the spending patterns that have crept in unnoticed, and having a clear plan to redirect savings toward what actually matters.

Our recent article covers what's driving the squeeze and the practical steps worth taking to get back on track.

Most people respond to a health insurance premium hike the same way. Downgrade to the cheapest policy and hope for the best. There's a smarter approach.

Start with your hospital cover tier. Many people pay for Gold or Silver cover that includes procedures they're unlikely to need at this life stage, and stepping down to a tier that fits can cut costs without leaving you exposed.

A few more levers to pull: raising your hospital excess, checking whether your Extras cover is actually used, and consolidating family policies where it makes sense.

One thing that catches people out. If you're approaching 31 without hospital cover, the Lifetime Health Cover loading adds 2% per year over 30, and that cost compounds fast.

Most people respond to a health insurance premium hike the same way. Downgrade to the cheapest policy available and hope for the best. There's a smarter approach.

It starts with your hospital cover tier. A lot of people are paying for gold or silver cover that includes procedures they're genuinely unlikely to need at this stage of life. Stepping down to a tier that actually matches your circumstances can meaningfully cut what you pay, without leaving you exposed.

From there, a few more levers worth pulling: increasing your hospital excess, checking whether your Extras cover is actually being used, spotting benefits you're already paying for elsewhere, and consolidating family policies where it makes sense.

One detail that catches people out. If you're approaching 31 and don't yet have hospital cover, the Lifetime Health Cover loading adds 2% to your premium for every year you wait over 30. That cost compounds fast.

Our recent article walks through how to bring your premiums down the right way, not by cutting cover you'll need later, but by paying only for what actually fits your life now.
