🗳️ Running for the upcoming local council elections? Know the tax rules!

If you're standing as a candidate in a Tasmanian local council election, some campaign expenses you personally pay may be tax deductible. 💰

Generally, eligible election expenses can be claimed up to $1,000 per election.

This may include costs such as:
📣 Advertising
🖨️ Printing and flyers
📍 Posters and campaign materials
📋 Other expenses directly related to contesting the election

🧾 Keep your receipts and invoices so your tax adviser can check what is eligible.

⚠️ Remember: a tax deduction reduces your taxable income — it doesn't mean you get the expense back.

*General information only. Your individual circumstances may affect the tax treatment.

Deductions for the costs of contesting parliamentary and local government elections, and union elections.

⛽ Fuel Tax Credits – have you got the right rate?

There have been substantial changes to Fuel Tax Credit rates recently, following changes to fuel excise.

For businesses claiming Fuel Tax Credits, this makes it particularly important to get the timing right.

👉 The rate you use is based on when you acquired the fuel — not simply the date you lodge your BAS.

With different rates applying across different periods, you need to take care when recording fuel purchases and calculating your claim. Applying the current rate to all of your fuel purchases could result in an incorrect claim.

If your business uses significant amounts of fuel, now is a good time to check:

✔️ When was the fuel acquired?
✔️ Which Fuel Tax Credit rate applied at that time?
✔️ Are your fuel purchases being recorded correctly?
✔️ Are you claiming the full amount you're entitled to?

The ATO has updated its Fuel Tax Credit rates and calculator to help businesses get their claims right.

👉 Check the latest Fuel Tax Credit rates:
https://www.ato.gov.au/businesses-and-organisations/income-deductions-and-concessions/incentives-and-concessions/fuel-schemes/fuel-tax-credits-business/rates-business -Fueltaxcreditratesforbusiness

👉 Use the ATO Fuel Tax Credit calculator and tools:
https://www.ato.gov.au/calculators-and-tools/fuel-tax-credit-tools

If you're unsure which rate applies to your fuel purchases, speak to the team at Elphinstone Stevens before lodging your BAS.

Please note: General information only. Fuel Tax Credit eligibility and rates depend on your circumstances, including the type of fuel, how it is used and when it was acquired.

Use these tools to help you check your eligibility to claim fuel tax credits and the amount you can claim.

Friday night recap -
On Wednesday Zali & Melissa attended Marist Regional College’s Career Expo to share their experiences with years 9-12 & hopefully encourage some students to consider a career in accounting.
We were very well supported by CPA Australia and would like to thank Kristy Scott for joining us and further enlightening the students of just where they can go with accounting.
We too thank MRC for their vision and hard work in getting this event together. Grateful to have been a part of it and looking forward to seeing some students take up further study & perhaps join us in a few years time.

We’re proud to give a little back by supporting local junior sport in our community.

It’s even better when one of the weekly awards we sponsor goes to the child of one of our clients!

Congratulations, Ollie, on a well-deserved award. Keep up the great work!

Go Cats! 🏉💙

📢 Thinking about booking your 2025–26 Tax Return? You might want to wait a little longer!

As the new financial year begins, we’re looking forward to helping everyone with their tax returns. However, we recommend holding off booking your appointment for a few weeks where possible.

Why? 🤔

The ATO is still receiving information from employers, banks, government agencies, health funds, share registries and other organisations. Lodging too early can mean important information is missing, increasing the chance of amendments or delays.

A couple of important reminders:

✅ You still need to keep records and receipts for any work-related deductions you claim. The rules around claiming deductions have not changed.

❌ The $1,000 standard deduction has NOT commenced and does not apply to this year’s tax returns. It only starts for the 2026-27 financial year.

As always, if you have any questions or need advice, the team at Elphinstone Stevens is here to help. We will be taking appointments for tax returns from Tuesday 14 July.

🎉 Happy New Financial Year! 🎉

Well… almost! Before we can welcome a brand-new financial year, there’s just one small job left…

🌧️ Count the cattle.
📦 Count the stock.
🦆 Count the ducks (because everyone says they need to be in a row!).

Before the clock ticks over:
✅ Count your trading stock
✅ Count your livestock
✅ Round up those receipts and records
✅ Get everything in order for a smooth start to the new financial year

And remember… accountants don’t mind a rainy EOFY. It means there’s a better chance our farming clients are inside, staying dry and finally tackling that paperwork! 😉☔

From all of us at Elphinstone Stevens, thank you to our wonderful clients for another fantastic year. We wish everyone a safe, successful and prosperous New Financial Year! 🥳

Here’s to fewer missing receipts, cooperative cattle, and ducks that actually stay in a row! 🦆🐄
