The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) now requires Proof of Identity (POI) for certain tax and registration processes to help protect individuals and businesses from identity theft and fraud.

Who does it apply to?
Individuals and businesses who are appointing a new tax agent.

What is it?
A verification process where you as the client confirm your identity using details from documents such as your driver’s licence, passport, Medicare card or other personal identification.

When did it come into effect?
Mandatory client identification requirements for tax agents came into effect in 2022.

Why is it necessary?
To protect your tax information to prevent identity fraud.

How is it done?
We as your tax agent will request identification details to verify your identity with the ATO.
