Simon Sinek often talks about the difference between training someone to do a job and developing someone to lead.

We spend so much time teaching people the skills to perform a role — but far less time teaching them how to lead people.

Being good at your job doesn’t automatically make you a good leader. Leadership requires a different set of skills: self-awareness, communication, empathy, accountability, courage, and the ability to bring out the best in others.

Maybe the real question for organisations isn’t just, “Can this person do the job?”

It’s also, “Have we taught them how to lead including how to inspire people by creating environments for success ?”

I was delighted to attend the launch of Xero For Good: Financial Fitness.

I’m particularly proud to be involved as a mentor, helping a small business owner understand how to set up and use Xero so that their numbers are accurate — not just for compliance, but so they can make better, more informed business decisions.

For many small business owners, understanding the numbers can feel overwhelming. Having the right knowledge and support can make such a difference to their confidence and, ultimately, the success of their business.

It’s wonderful to be part of an initiative that is helping small businesses build that financial confidence and understand the numbers behind their business.

Well done to Tam and the team for identifying the need and bringing this important initiative together. I’m very happy to be part of it! 👏

Your bookkeeping isn’t only about meeting deadlines—it should help you run a stronger business.

Now that the financial year has ended, your numbers can help you understand:

📊 which services or products generated the best results
💰 whether your sales produced enough profit
🏦 where cash-flow pressure occurred
🧾 how much customers still owe you
📈 whether your expenses are increasing faster than revenue
🎯 what needs to change during the new financial year

Having up-to-date accounts gives you more than a smoother handover to your accountant. It gives you reliable information for setting targets, managing cash flow, reviewing prices and updating your business plan.

Don’t wait until the end of another financial year to discover what happened.

If you would like help cleaning up your accounts and understanding what your numbers are telling you, send me a message.

When was the last time you reviewed your business plan?

A business plan shouldn’t be something you create once and then file away. It should evolve as your business, financial position, customers and goals change.

The beginning of a new financial year is a good opportunity to consider:

✓ what worked during the past year
✓ what didn’t go according to plan
✓ which services or products are most profitable
✓ whether your pricing is still sustainable
✓ your revenue and cash-flow goals
✓ your priorities for the next 90 days

I’ve created a free Business Plan Check-Up to help you identify which areas of your plan may need attention.

Message me the word PLAN, and I’ll send you a copy.

If you would like help understanding your numbers and turning your ideas into a practical plan, I can help with that too.

Do you need to lodge a Taxable Payments Annual Report?

TPARs for the 2025–26 financial year are due by 28 August 2026.

You may need to lodge if your business operates in an applicable industry and you paid contractors to provide services. This can include businesses providing:

🔨 Building and construction services
🧹 Cleaning services
🚚 Courier or road freight services
💻 Information technology services
🔐 Security, investigation or surveillance services

Before lodging, it is important to check that:

✓ contractor payments have been allocated correctly
✓ ABNs and contractor details are complete
✓ reimbursements and materials have been treated appropriately
✓ employees haven’t been incorrectly included as contractors
✓ the report agrees with your bookkeeping records

Not sure whether your business needs to lodge—or whether your records are ready?

Send me a message and I can help you review your contractor payments and prepare your TPAR.

Tax time is here, and getting organised now can save you time, money and stress later.

Here are a few key reminders for small business owners:

✅ Remember the 3 golden rules for claiming deductions:
• The expense must relate to earning your business income.
• Only claim the business portion if it's partly for private use.
• Keep records and receipts to support every claim.

🏡 Working from home? You may be able to claim eligible home office expenses using either the fixed rate method or actual expenses.

🚗 Don't forget motor vehicle expenses if you use your car for business.

💼 Check whether you're eligible for small business tax concessions and the instant asset write-off.

📅 Stay on top of your employer obligations, including:
• Payday Super
• Single Touch Payroll (STP)
• Record keeping requirements

📱 Make tax time easier by using digital tools like the ATO app and my Deductions to keep your records organised throughout the year.

The earlier you prepare, the smoother tax time will be.

Small business owners shouldn’t have to work everything out alone.

Running a business requires you to make decisions about finances, customers, systems, technology, people and growth—often without having someone impartial to talk them through with.

Mentoring can provide something that software or a template cannot:

🔹 A safe place to test ideas
🔹 Questions that uncover the real issue
🔹 Practical guidance based on experience
🔹 Accountability to turn plans into action
🔹 Encouragement when business feels overwhelming

After more than 20 years working across technology, leadership, business improvement and finance, I have seen how valuable the right support can be.

Sometimes the most important part of mentoring isn’t providing the answer. It is helping a business owner recognise that they already have the foundations—and supporting them to take the next step.
