A small but mighty critical mineral, gallium is essential for semiconductors, advanced electronics, telecommunications and defence technologies.

Rare and difficult to replace, it is vital to the future of advanced manufacturing.

Today, Australia is strengthening its role in global critical mineral supply chains, with Alcoa announcing a new gallium production facility at its Wagerup alumina refinery in Western Australia.

New Hope Group is partnering with the Clontarf Foundation to support young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men to build confidence, life skills and employment opportunities.

Through a three-year, $450,000 commitment, New Hope is helping Clontarf deliver programs that strengthen education outcomes, build workplace readiness and create pathways into future careers.

Founded by sisters Rowena Leslie and Katrina Stubbs, Kai Rho has grown from a small family business with a single contract at Tropicana Gold Mine to a company employing 40 people and servicing major clients across Western Australia.

Beyond business growth, Kai Rho is creating opportunities through Indigenous employment, training and community leadership, demonstrating the important role Aboriginal-owned businesses play in building stronger regional communities and a more inclusive mining sector.

MCA member Mawal, an Indigenous-owned and led organisation, is developing the next generation of Indigenous commercial leaders.

Through its 12-month Leadership Program, Mawal is helping Indigenous professionals build the skills, confidence and commercial experience needed to succeed in senior leadership and decision-making roles. The inaugural cohort includes 65 participants, with almost half working in the resources sector.

Supported by companies including BHP, the program demonstrates how industry partnerships can help create meaningful pathways to leadership and economic participation.

At BHP’s Mt Arthur South operation in New South Wales that is run by Thiess, the MASITE (Mt Arthur South Inclusive Trainee Employment) Program is helping build a more diverse and locally representative workforce. The program provides women and Indigenous community members with training, mentoring and direct pathways into mining careers.

Since 2021, the program has achieved strong results, with 85% of trainees moving into permanent roles and Indigenous workforce participation at the site increasing from 5.5% to 13.4%.

Initiatives like MASITE demonstrate how the minerals industry is creating opportunities, building skills and supporting stronger communities for generations to come.

Arafura Rare Earths is working with the Central Land Council and Traditional Owners to create long-term employment, training and business opportunities through the Nolans Rare Earths Project.

Built around the project’s projected 38-year operating life, the partnership supports workforce development, business growth and increased Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation, with a target of around 20 per cent Indigenous employment during operations.

By investing in skills, capability and local businesses, initiatives like Nolans are helping create lasting economic opportunities for generations to come.

🚨 New IR laws could put up to $50 billion in mining-related Commonwealth contracts at risk.

The MCA is urging senators to oppose the government’s discrimination legislation, warning it could force businesses into union-approved agreements to access government support, finance, and procurement opportunities.

Mining needs policies that drive productivity, competitiveness, and value for taxpayers, not measures that risk higher costs and reduced investment certainty.
