Not-for-profit organisations, this is an important ATO deadline to keep on your radar. If your NFP has an active ABN and self-assesses as income tax exempt, you need to lodge your 2025–26 NFP self-review return between 1 July and 31 October.

This annual return helps confirm whether your organisation is still eligible to self-assess as income tax exempt.

Before lodging, the ATO recommends using the NFP self-review return question guide to prepare your answers.

Things you need to know:

✅ If you have previous year returns to lodge, these need to be submitted before your 2025–26 return.

✅ Late lodgement penalties may apply for overdue returns.

✅ You are able to lodge through Online services for business, the automated self-help phone service, or through a registered tax agent.

Two ATO updates worth knowing for the 2026–27 financial year.

The ATO has released updated car thresholds and reasonable travel and overtime meal allowance amounts for FY27. Here are the key points:

✅ The car limit threshold for depreciation purposes is $69,883 for 2026–27.

✅ The maximum GST credit for a luxury car will normally be $6,353, unless a specific exception applies.

✅ The luxury car tax threshold is $91,661 for fuel-efficient vehicles and $80,809 for all other luxury vehicles.

✅ The reasonable amount for overtime meal expenses is $40 for the 2026–27 income year.

These updates are useful to understand if your business is planning to purchase a vehicle, claim motor vehicle expenses, pay allowances, or review employee travel and overtime meal arrangements.

The ATO has released guidance on changes to non-individual tax return forms and schedules for 2026. Some have changed, and some have stayed the same.

The main changes relate to trust tax returns, where the ATO has added some new items and changed others. A few key points:

✅ Company tax returns have no major form changes for 2026.

✅ Trust tax returns have some new reporting sections, mainly around distributions and investment income.

✅ Some partnership and trust labels about exploration credits have been removed.

✅ Some companies will need to answer extra questions about complex tax positions, including Division 7A.

✅ Several schedules, including CGT, R&D and international dealings, have no changes for 2026.

Read more here: https://www.ato.gov.au/forms-and-instructions/tax-time-summary-of-non-individual-form-changes-2026

If you are unsure whether these changes affect your business, company, trust or partnership return, please get in touch. We’re here to help you stay prepared and organised.

Scams tend to ramp up around tax time, so it’s worth understanding how the ATO helps keep your financial information safe.

CPA Australia’s With Interest podcast recently released an episode featuring Jade Hawkins, Assistant Commissioner in the ATO’s fraud and criminal behaviours business line. In the episode they discuss ATO data protection, tax time fraud prevention and the practical steps taxpayers can take to stay safer online.

Three key points from the episode:

✅ The ATO uses fraud detection tools, including real-time data analytics, to help identify suspicious activity and stop fraud earlier.

✅ The ATO app gives taxpayers more control over their account, including real-time alerts, account lock and unlock features, and tools to help verify whether an ATO call is genuine.

✅ Strong myID settings, multifactor authentication, software updates and secure passphrases all help protect your personal and financial information.

The message is clear: fraud is always evolving. Staying alert, checking ATO communications before responding, and reviewing your online security settings are simple steps that help protect your tax and super information.

New financial year, fresh opportunity to get your business systems working properly.

The start of FY27 is a good time to reset, review your numbers and make sure your business is set up for the year ahead.

Whether your focus is growth, better cash flow, cleaner bookkeeping or staying on top of tax and compliance obligations, taking a few proactive steps now helps reduce pressure later.

Some smart ways to stay ahead for the new financial year:

✅ Use receipt scanning apps to simplify your record keeping

✅ Schedule regular check-ins with your accountant to stay on track

✅ Set clear financial goals, budgets and business plans for FY27

✅ Review your superannuation strategy, including contribution caps, before making extra contributions

✅ Review your business and personal insurance cover

✅ Check whether your business structure still suits your goals, income and risk

✅ Review planned asset purchases and check current instant asset write-off rules before spending

A little planning now makes a big difference at tax time and throughout the year.
