Are You A Small Business With Late Lodgements?
The ATO announced on the 9th May 2023 that any late lodgement penalties for failure to lodge on time would be automatically remitted for small businesses. The amnesty applies to outstanding tax returns, business activity statements (BAS) and fringe benefits tax (FBT) with a due date between 1 December 2019 and 28th February 2022.
You will need to have an annual turnover of under $10m at the time the original lodgement was due. The amnesty doesn't apply to privately owned groups, or individuals controlling over $5 million of net wealth.
You have between the 1 June 2023 and 31 December 2023 to lodge and take advantage of this amnesty.
If you are no longer trading but still have outstanding lodgements, then it is important that you get up to date and then cancel your ABN and any other tax registrations such as GST and PAYGW. We can help you with this.
We can also assist with setting a repayment plan to help you deal with any payables that arise from the lodgements.
If you are in this situation, then give us a call and we will help you to get up to date and relieve the stress and worry of being behind on your lodgements.

Small Business Instant Asset Write-Off

In the 2023 Federal Budget the instant asset write-off threshold has been temporarily increased to $20,000 from the 1st July 2023 to 30th June 2024. The threshold is GST exclusive, so if you are registered for GST, the value of the asset purchased is under $22,000.

For assets of $20,000 or more, they can still be placed in a small business pool and depreciated at 15% in the first year and 30% for each year there after.

For the remainder of the 2023 financial year, any asset purchased that is first used or installed ready for use by the 30th June 2023, can be expensed in full using the temporary full expensing measures. There is no threhsold on these measures.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact our office.

Super Is Increasing!
Just a little reminder that your super guarantee (SG) payments are due on the 28th of the month following the previous quarter. That is, March 23 quarter SG is due for payment on the 28th April 2023. The payment must be paid into the correct fund by this date, otherwise they will be late and you will not be able to claim a tax deduction for the SG.

If you are an employer, the SG rate is increasing from the current 10.5%. You will need to pay 11% SG from the 1st July 2023. This is to be paid for all eligible employees, regardless of how much their earnings are.

If you are an employee, it is always a good idea to regularly check with your super fund to ensure that the payments are being made to your fund. This can usually be done by logging into your super account on line with your super fund. If you don't think your super is being paid, then talk to your employer. The ATO can also assist with this, use the link below.

Cryptocurrency Records For Taxation Purposes

If you have been transacting in cryptocurrency, remember that each sale, transfer and swap counts as a disposal for capital gains tax (CGT) purposes. The ATO have access to this infomration and it appears on your ATO prefill report that you have held or disposed of cryptocurrency in the financial year.

Taxpayers who have entered the crypto world will use a platform on which they trade on, much the same way as share traders do. At year end when it comes time to do your tax, we ask that you download a order history report and also a send/receive report in csv format. This will include all transactions that have occurred in your wallet whether through buying or selling, as well any airdrops, staking rewards or other types of transfers. We use these csv files to upload into an Australian Taxation Crypto Calculator in order to quantify your capital gain tax situation for the financial year.

At some stage you may find that you are unable to gain access to your wallet so it is advised that you regularly export these csv files of your transactions, perhaps every quarter. Before closing a wallet, always make sure you export a full transaction history.

The ATO link below shows the records that you must keep for taxation purposes and tips for protecting your crypto asset records.
