Use a car for work or business – either in your own name or through a company?
A simple 12-week logbook plus the right odometer readings can make a big difference at tax time.
✅ What to record in your logbook
- Date of each trip
- Start & end odometer readings
- Total km
- Reason for the trip (work/business)
📅 Odometer readings – when to do them
Individuals (using the car for work):
- Take an odometer reading at:
- The start and end of your 12-week logbook period, and
- 1 July and 30 June each year (start/end of the financial year).
Companies (including directors/employees with a company car):
- Take an odometer reading at:
- The start and end of the 12-week logbook period, and
- The start and end of the FBT year (1 April – 31 March).
❗ Why it matters
- Individuals: Supports your work-related car deduction and can help maximise it.
- Companies: Helps calculate business vs private use and may reduce FBT on company cars.
No logbook + no odometer readings often = limited claim or higher FBT.
