Pricing tells a story about your business - how you value your time, your expertise, and the outcomes you deliver. When it hasn't been reviewed in a while, that story can quietly fall out of step, showing up as margins that feel tighter than they should.

Reviewing your pricing regularly is simply good business practice - a way of making sure it still reflects the business you're running today.

Good financial habits often start with small structural choices. Keeping business and personal spending separate with a dedicated business account is one of them.

It brings a level of clarity that ripples outward - into your reporting, your forecasting, and the confidence you feel making decisions for your business.

Did you know unpaid invoices can have a real impact on your cash flow?

You’ve done the work. You’ve sent the invoice. But until it’s paid, that money isn’t available to cover your business expenses.

If you have unpaid invoices sitting on your books, now is a good time to review them. A quick follow-up can sometimes be all it takes to get things moving.

Six weeks into the new financial year - how is your cash flow looking?

By now, you’ve got a few weeks of actual numbers behind you. That makes this a good time to look beyond what’s already happened and think about what’s coming next.

What’s due to come in? What bills are coming up? Are there quieter periods ahead? And are there any larger expenses you need to plan for?

A cash flow forecast can help you see the months ahead, rather than simply reacting when money gets tight.

To wrap up our rental property tax series, here’s one final thing to keep in mind …..

Was your property rented, or genuinely available for rent, for the whole year?

If not, you may not be able to claim a full year's worth of rental expenses. Expenses may need to be apportioned based on the period the property was available for rent and any private use.

This can be particularly important for properties that are also used privately, such as holiday homes.

If you own a rental property, you’ll need records to support both the rental income you receive and the expenses you claim when you’re preparing your tax return.

This can include:
🗄 Rental statements showing the income received.
🗄 Loan statements showing the interest charged.
🗄 Rates, water bill and insurance records.
🗄 Receipts and invoices for repairs, maintenance and other property expenses.
🗄 Records for improvements and assets purchased for the property.

It’s important to keep these records because not every property expense is treated the same way for tax purposes. For example, some repairs may be immediately deductible, while improvements may need to be claimed over time.

Did you know? 🤔

If you've borrowed money to purchase or improve your rental property, the interest on that loan may be tax deductible. This can include loans used to buy the property, fund renovations or repairs, or purchase assets for the property, such as an air conditioner.

The key is that the borrowed money must be used for income-producing purposes.
