πŸ’¬ FAQ FRIDAY

❓ "CAN I CLAIM THE CLOTHES I WEAR TO WORK?"

Just because you wear something to work doesn't necessarily make it tax deductible!

Everyday clothing such as jeans, business shirts, plain black pants and ordinary shoes aren't deductible, even if your employer requires you to wear them.

However, you may be able to claim:

πŸ‘· Protective clothing required for your work
πŸ‘• Compulsory uniforms that meet ATO requirements
πŸ₯Ό Occupation-specific clothing
🧺 Eligible laundry expenses for deductible work clothing

Remember, the clothing must meet the ATO's requirements β€” simply purchasing it for work isn't enough!

Not sure whether your workwear qualifies? Keep your receipts and ask your accountant.

πŸ’° BUSINESS EXPENSE OF THE WEEK: MOBILE PHONES πŸ“±

Can you claim your mobile phone as a business expense?

Potentially β€” but if you use the same phone for both business and private purposes, you generally can't claim the entire cost.

Instead, you'll need to determine a reasonable business-use percentage based on your circumstances and records.

For example:

πŸ“± 70% business use
🏠 30% private use

You may generally only be entitled to claim the business-related portion of eligible costs.

πŸ“š BOOKKEEPING ISN'T JUST FOR TAX TIME

Keeping your books up to date isn't simply about making your accountant happy!

Accurate bookkeeping can help you:

πŸ“Š Understand how your business is performing
πŸ’΅ Monitor cash flow
🧾 Keep track of GST and tax obligations
πŸ’° Identify outstanding customers
πŸ“ˆ Compare performance from month to month
🎯 Make better-informed business decisions

If your accounts are only updated once a year at tax time, you're missing out on valuable information about your business throughout the year.

Good numbers lead to better decisions.

πŸ’° "MY BUSINESS MADE A PROFIT… SO WHERE'S ALL THE CASH?"

It's a question many business owners ask.

Profit and cash aren't the same thing.

Your business might report a profit while cash has been used for things such as:

🏦 Loan repayments
πŸ’» Asset purchases
πŸ’° Owner drawings
πŸ“¦ Increasing inventory
🧾 Paying outstanding bills
πŸ’³ Paying tax and GST liabilities

That's why looking only at the profit on your Profit & Loss report doesn't tell the entire story.

Understanding both profitability AND cash flow gives you a much clearer picture of how your business is actually performing.

πŸ“Š BUSINESS OWNERS: DO YOU KNOW YOUR NUMBERS?

Three numbers every business owner should understand:

πŸ’° REVENUE
How much income is your business generating?

πŸ“ˆ PROFIT
After your expenses are taken into account, how much are you actually making?

πŸ’΅ CASH FLOW
Is enough money coming into the bank to cover what's going out?

A business can have strong sales but poor profitability β€” or make a profit on paper while struggling for cash.

Understanding your numbers helps you make better business decisions before problems arise.

πŸ’³ "I PAID FOR IT FROM THE BUSINESS ACCOUNT, SO IT'S DEDUCTIBLE… RIGHT?"

Not necessarily!

The bank account used to pay for something doesn't determine whether the expense is tax deductible.

The important question is: What was the expense actually for?

A private expense doesn't become deductible simply because you:

❌ Paid with the business credit card
❌ Put it through Xero
❌ Kept the receipt
❌ Called it a "business expense"

Business owners should try to keep private and business spending separate wherever possible. It makes bookkeeping cleaner and tax time much easier!

πŸ’° GST REGISTERED? DON'T FORGET ABOUT YOUR PRICING!

When your business registers for GST, you need to consider how GST will affect the prices you charge customers.

For example, if you previously charged $110 for a service, you could:

➑️ Continue charging $110 GST inclusive, meaning part of that amount is now GST; or

➑️ Add GST on top of your existing fee, making the total price $121.

The right approach will depend on your business, customers and pricing strategy.

If you're approaching the GST registration threshold, don't forget to consider the impact on your pricing.

πŸ€” DO I NEED TO REGISTER FOR GST?

For most Australian businesses, GST registration becomes compulsory when your GST turnover reaches β€” or is expected to reach β€” $75,000.

Once registered, you'll generally need to:

🧾 Charge GST on taxable sales
πŸ’° Claim eligible GST credits on business purchases
πŸ“Š Lodge Business Activity Statements
🏦 Pay the net GST amount to the ATO

If your business is getting close to the threshold, don't wait until you've sailed straight past it.

Speak to your accountant so you understand when registration may be required and what needs to change in your bookkeeping and pricing.

πŸ’» BUYING EQUIPMENT FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

A new laptop, piece of machinery or tool might be used 100% for business β€” but that doesn't necessarily mean you can claim the entire purchase price immediately.

Depending on the circumstances, the cost may be:

βœ… Immediately deductible under an available deduction or concession; or
πŸ“‰ Claimed over time through depreciation.

Private use may also need to be taken into account.

If you're planning a significant business purchase, it's worth checking the tax treatment before you buy rather than waiting until tax time.
