If you want to go and do hours of research to ensure you get tax time right as a small business owner, the ATO. has put together a Tax Time toolkit for you.

But here's the thing....

Where is your time best spent??

6-10 hours reading all the information (and I mean all of it) and possibly still being unsure and then possibly getting it wrong?

Or just paying a tax agent to handle it for you?

Information to help small businesses at tax time and all year round.

End of May check… cleaner business or same chaos?

Be honest.

Are your books:
Reconciled
Up to date
Making sense

Or are they:
“I’ll do it later”
A bit guessy
Quietly stressing you out

No judgement. Just a checkpoint.

Winter kicks in on Monday… which means slower mornings, busier schedules, and even less motivation to deal with messy books.

Do yourself a favour and reset now:
• Reconcile your accounts
• Code the stragglers
• Check what’s actually in the bank

Close the month with clarity, not confusion.

Future you (and June you) will be very grateful.

Consider this your very official, highly professional sign to get your sh*t together… financially.

Not in a “new spreadsheet, new life” kind of way.
Just in a “please stop avoiding your bank feed” kind of way.

You know the signs:
• Transactions piling up
• Receipts living their best life in your camera roll
• Bank recs… pending since who knows when
• Logging in and immediately wanting to log back out

We see you.

Start small:
Reconcile one account
Code a few transactions
Upload a couple of receipts

That’s it. Momentum > perfection.

Because nothing says “I’ve got this” like actually knowing your numbers… instead of hoping for the best.

The top 5 bookkeeping mistakes we fix (on repeat):

1. Bank recs not done
If it’s not reconciled, it’s not reliable. Simple.

2. Transactions dumped into “Ask My Accountant”
That’s not a category… it’s a cry for help.

3. Mixing business and personal
Your books shouldn’t read like your weekend.

4. Duplicate or missing transactions
Both will mess with your numbers and your decisions.

5. “I’ll deal with it later”
Later always turns into a bigger, more expensive job.

None of these are unusual. But left too long, they create chaos.

Clean books aren’t complicated… they’re just consistent.

Want to feel more in control of your business this week? Start with a few quick wins.

No overhaul. No “I’ll do it when I have a full day free.” Just small, useful actions:

• Reconcile one bank account
• Code a handful of transactions properly
• Upload the receipts sitting in your camera roll
• Chase one overdue invoice
• Review your cash balance (the real one, not the guess)

That’s it.

These aren’t big tasks, but they stop things from piling up and give you instant clarity.

Because a clean business isn’t built in one big hit. It’s built in small, consistent tidy-ups.

Start with one. You’ll feel better immediately.

That thing you’ve been “meaning to sort”?

Still there. Just… bigger.

It’s the unreconciled account.
The pile of uncoded transactions.
The inbox full of receipts you’ll “get to later.”

Ignoring it doesn’t make it disappear.
It just turns into a much more expensive, time-consuming version of the same problem.

And when you finally open it… surprise! It now requires snacks, a strong coffee, and emotional support.

A quick fix now saves you from the full-blown cleanup later.

Tidy a little, often. Your future self will thank you (and be far less dramatic about it).

It’s Friday. Time to close the laptop (mentally, at least).

The to-do list? Still there.
The admin? Also still there.
Your “I’ll sort that next week” pile? Growing nicely.

But that’s a Monday problem.

For now - log off, pour your fave beverage, and enjoy the weekend.

Just don’t be surprised when Monday rolls around like:
“Hey bestie… ready to clean up your business?”

We’ll be here when you are. Have a good one!

Not everything in your business should be automated… and not everything should be outsourced.

Getting this wrong is how SMEs end up with messy systems and still doing the work anyway.

Here’s a simple way to think about it:

Automate the repetitive stuff
Think invoices, reminders, recurring transactions, data entry. If it happens the same way every time, let tech handle it.

Outsource the “please don’t make me do this” stuff
Bookkeeping clean-ups, BAS prep, payroll headaches, anything that drains your time and brain.

Keep the decisions and direction
Knowing your numbers, understanding your cash flow, and making strategic calls. That’s the bit you actually want control over.

The goal isn’t to do everything faster.
It’s to stop doing the wrong things altogether.

Work smarter, not buried-in-admin harder.

Pay Day Super is coming

We have been talking about it on socials, in emails, in blogs and in newsletters now since December last year (I know right...it's never ending fun around here).

Please make sure you are ready for 1 July 2026.

Being away and not being able to approve super is not a valid reason for missing any 7 business day deadline.

Processing pays weeks after they actually happened because you couldn't be bothered....nope, not going to fly.

Not having enough cashflow to pay super is not a valid reason for not submitting super batches.

Changing pay cycles to "delay" superannuation should not be happening.

Yes, superannuation for contractors is most definitely a thing (*obviously rules apply)
