What does a bookkeeper do?
A bookkeeper is anyone who performs BAS Services for a fee.
BAS services refer to the professional services provided by registered BAS agents to assist businesses in preparing and lodging their Business Activity Statements (BAS) and ensuring compliance with Australian tax obligations for GST, PAYG, FBT & LCT.
Key Functions of BAS Services are:
1. Preparation and Lodgement: BAS agents prepare and lodge BAS on behalf of businesses, ensuring that all information is accurate and compliant with ATO requirements.
2. Tax Calculation: They calculate the various tax obligations that a business must report,
such as GST and PAYG withholding, helping businesses understand their liabilities and
entitlements.
3. Advisory Services: BAS agents provide expert advice on BAS-related obligations, guiding businesses through complex tax regulations and helping them navigate their financial responsibilities.
4. Representation: Registered BAS agents can represent businesses in dealings with the
ATO, addressing inquiries, responding to audits, and resolving issues related to tax
obligations.
5. Compliance Assurance: They ensure that businesses meet their compliance
requirements, reducing the risk of penalties and errors in tax reporting.
In Australia, anyone who performs BAS services for a fee on a contractual basis must be BAS
Agent registered.
Operating as a contracted bookkeeper while not registered as a BAS Agent is actually illegal in Australia, with penalties of up to $82,500 for individuals and $412,500 for corporations per breach.
So it is important to make sure when your business is engaging a bookkeeper, that they are qualified and registered.
If you are new to business, or feel overwhelmed with your financial reporting responsibilities, engage a qualified and registered bookkeeper sooner rather than later.
A good bookkeeper won't cost you money, they will save you money!
