Do
✅Be as thorough as possible – Getting your tax return right is your responsibility and that includes declaring all income and claiming appropriate expenses.
✅Claim the appropriate work-related expenses – Claiming conventional clothing, travel to and from work or if your employer reimburses you for an expense, are common mistakes. Check the ATO for what you can claim.
✅Get your motor vehicle expenses right – You must ensure the claim is accurate and properly evidenced. To claim accurately, you should keep a logbook or diary.
✅Purchase work-related items before June 30 – Individuals can claim an immediate deduction for items needed for work that cost $300 or less, as long as your employer does not reimburse you for that expense.
✅Seek professional tax help – the more complex your tax affairs, the more you should consider getting help from a professional. Tax Agents help ensure your tax returns are right, and you claim the maximum tax deductions you’re entitled to.
Don’t
❎Rely on pre-filled data from the ATO – Don’t assume that the income data from the ATO is correct or complete. If you lodge too early you can end up having to amend your return later which can result in having to pay tax to the ATO.
❎Exaggerate Claims – If your claims are more than what the ATO would expect from someone in a similar job to you, or with similar financial investments, you may be audited.
❎Make incorrect claims on rental properties – Repairs to a property because of wear and tear or damage from tenants are tax deductible. However, if the work results in an improvement rather than just repairing damage, or is the replacement of an asset, the expenses will need to be depreciated.
❎Don’t follow bad advice – Content creators come up with all sorts of wonderful ways to attract attention and likes and will make bold claims about how much money you could make by following their advice on your tax return.
❎ Don’t fall for scams – Unsolicited messages claiming to be the ATO or myGov can trick you into acting quickly and letting your guard down on the promise of financial gain or by convincing you have done something wrong and need to rectify the situation quickly to avoid penalties.

Australian government payments, pensions and allowances are income amounts that you receive from a government agency. Commonly these payments are from Services Australia or the Department of Veteran's Affairs.

Depending on the payment type you receive, the payments might be either:
- Taxable meaning you pay tax on the amounts and must declare the income in your tax return.
- Tax-free meaning you don't pay tax on the amounts, but you may need to declare them in your tax return so we can work out your eligibility for tax offsets and other benefits.

Taxable government payments, pensions and allowances include:
✔️Aged Pension
✔️Carer Payment
✔️Austudy Payment
✔️JobSeeker Payment
✔️Youth Allowance
✔️Veteran Payment
✔️Invalidity Service Pension, if you are age pension age or over
✔️Disability Support Pension, if you are age pension age or over
✔️Income Support Supplement
✔️Parenting Payment (partnered)
✔️Disaster Recovery Allowance

This is not an exhaustive list, for a full list of Australian Government payments, pensions and allowances see:

If you lodge your tax return online the ATO will pre-fill most of these payments, pensions and allowances in your tax return. You will need to check the pre-fill information and manually include any amounts that have not pre-filled in your tax return.

The ATO uses data-driven sources for employment income, interest, superannuation payments, dividends from shares and government payments to prefill income information into your tax return.

However, not all income will prefill into your tax return. You should be including:
✅ Employment Income
✅ Certain Government Payments
✅ Interest Income
✅ Business Partnership and Trust Income
✅ Superannuation Payments and Annuities
✅ Foreign and Worldwide Income
✅ Dividends
✅ Rental Property Income
✅ Managed Investment Income
✅ Crypto Asset Income
✅ Capital Gains

The ATO will eventually follow up on any income that was missed in your tax return will amend your tax return which normally results in having to pay tax to the ATO.

Best to get it right the first time!

We know that many Queenslanders have been impacted by the aftermath of Cyclone Alfred and will likely be able to access help from the government by way of Disaster Recovery Payments. Here is what you need to know about the tax consequences of receiving these types of payments.

If you’ve been affected by a natural disaster like Cyclone Alfred, you may be eligible to receive a relief payment in the form of Disaster Recovery Allowance (DRA) and/or Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).

These payments are generally taxable. However, the government may declare that, for some natural disasters, DRA and NDRRA payments are exempt income. If you have carried forward losses from an earlier income year, you will need to reduce that amount by any exempt income.

If the payment is taxable, you can ask to have tax deducted from the payment to reduce a potential tax bill in your tax return.

If you received a payment because you were impacted by a disaster, find out if the payment is taxable and whether to include it in your tax return.
