The ATO gives the green light to start lodging your 2025 tax return

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has advised that most taxpayers with simple affairs will now have their information pre-filled into their accounts.
Assistant Commissioner Rob Thomson said that the ATO had completed pre-fill of over 91 million pieces of information available for individual tax returns from employers, banks, government agencies and private health insurers.

Whether you lodge using a registered tax agent or lodge yourself through myTax, pre-fill information will now be available,’ Mr Thomson said.

When preparing your tax return you should check the pre-filled data to ensure accuracy, add anything that may be missing and then include any deductions you are entitled to claim.

Taxpayers have until 31 October to lodge their tax return or to get on the books of a registered tax agent, which may allow more time to lodge.

Beware of tax advice from 'finfluencers'.

Finfluencers are individuals who use social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok to share financial advice including tax advice. While they can make financial topics more accessible, it's crucial to be aware that not all finfluencers are qualified or regulated, and some may promote products or strategies that are not in the best interest of their followers.

Unfortunately, they don’t always have the necessary qualifications to give out this advice or provide all the information you need to make a fully informed decision. This can result in you losing thousands of dollars and cause you serious financial harm.
The main way ‘finfluencers’ make their money is by getting paid by companies that want to promote their financial products through the ‘finfluencer’s’ social media platform. These financial products may not be suitable for you and the ‘finfluencer’ may not fully understand all the risks of promoting this to you.

If you’re going to use someone to help you manage your tax affairs or give you tax advice, make sure they’re registered by checking the

The end of financial year is fast approaching. Now is the time to start gathering your information in preparation for your 2024 Individual Tax Return.
As ‘tax time’ approaches, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has announced it will be taking a close look at 3 common errors being made by taxpayers:
1. Incorrectly claiming work-related expenses - Simply "copying and pasting" your deductions from 2023 will likely result in a review of your tax return. To claim a working from home deduction for 2024 using the fixed rate method you are required to have kept diary evidence showing the total hours worked from home; and records of the additional costs you have incurred for working from home (eg. Electricity bill, internet bill).

2. Inflating claims for rental properties - the ATO has previously indicated that deductions are often incorrectly claimed in relation to holiday homes and similar properties (e.g., deductions for interest expenses, council rates, building insurance and utility costs). In particular, many of the errors identified in relation to these claims have traditionally related to incorrectly apportioning (including failing to apportion) expenses during periods that a holiday home or similar property is:
• not actually rented, nor genuinely available for rent, during an income year;
• used or occupied by the owner for private purposes; and/or
• used by friends or relatives at no cost or at a discount to market value rent.

3. Failing to include all income when lodging - usually as a result of lodging early. If you have received income from multiple sources, you need to wait until this is pre-filled in your tax return before lodging. For most people, this information will be automatically pre-filled in their tax return by the end of July.

If you have any queries relating to the above or any other taxation matters please contact Kerri.
