Well that didn’t take long!

Yesterday we heard that borrowing through an SMSF may be abolished moving forward.

And already I’m seeing posts saying, ‘We’ll help you secure a property in the next 45 days before the rules change.’

But hang on….

If finding the right property usually takes three months… what’s suddenly changed that means it can now be done in 45 days? Especially when stock levels are already tight??

Setting up an SMSF shouldn’t be a rushed decision.
It’s not just a property decision.
It’s a tax decision.
An investment decision.
A cash flow decision.
A retirement decision.

And whenever someone is encouraging you to make a major financial decision because you’re about to ‘miss out’, that’s usually your cue to slow down.

Superannuation is a financial product. Advice about whether an SMSF is appropriate for you should come from a licensed financial adviser, not from someone whose income depends on you buying a property.

So take your time. Retirement planning isn’t something you should rush because of a countdown timer!

For a while there we stopped using term deposits as the interest rates wasn’t competitive enough compared to other At-Call saver accounts. However, more recently these have come back into favour for clients with short term investment horizons where we don’t want to invest in growth assets.

We have found some younger clients haven’t ever heard of term deposits or knew they exist.

There are people who benefit and people who lose with all economic and budget adjustments and being financial adviser is tricky as we have clients on both sides of the rate rise.
