"It's not intergenerational wealth. It's intergenerational chaos."

That was a line from 𝐏𝐞𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐬 during our recent conversation for 𝐄𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐥'𝐬 𝐼𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 series, and it really stuck with me.

Because while intergenerational planning is often framed around wealth transfer, the reality is usually much more nuanced.

It's ageing parents. Adult children. Family businesses. Competing priorities. Difficult conversations. And the ripple effects these things can have across an entire family.

I’m honoured to be named a finalist for the Financial Advice Association Australia - FAAA of the Year, an award that recognises excellence and leadership in our profession.

While the recognition carries my name, it truly reflects the values instilled in me by my late father, Magdy Stephan, who helped pioneer financial planning in Australia.

His commitment to honesty, clarity and service continues to guide everything we do at Stephan Independent Advisory. I want to thank the judging panel for this honour, my clients for their trust, my brother James for his partnership, and my entire family for their unwavering support.

Most of all, I see this as a way of honouring my father’s legacy and carrying it forward in the work we do every day.

Whether we are ultimately going to be successful, I already feel hugely successful, and I am really, really proud.

Last week, I had the pleasure of presenting to the team at 5 ELK in the Philippines.

The session focused on a question that’s the driving force behind everything I do: what creates a meaningful life?

I shared the lessons I’ve learnt from thousands of conversations with financial advice clients, as well as the more than 80 interviews I’ve conducted as part of my podcast It's Never About Money.

The key takeaway is that while money matters, it’s never the full story.

I broke it down into the six key areas that come up again and again when people talk about living well – financial security, health, personal growth, family and relationships, career, and community – and outlined the ideas that have most resonated with me in each category.

The 5 ELK team may work behind the scenes, but they play an important role in helping financial advisers support people through some of life’s biggest decisions. The session was designed to add context to the work they do every day, and I hope it also offered a few ideas to implement in their own lives.

I loved the process of putting this presentation together, because it gave me a chance to reflect on what I’ve learnt so far – from clients, podcast guests and my personal journey.
