🌟 Client Spotlight: Haus of Alma 🌟

One of the things we love most about working with local businesses is seeing the story behind the brand - and Haus of Alma is a perfect example. Built by Lusanna and Ant, this Port Macquarie boutique has created the kind of experience you don’t get “anywhere”.

Their recent rebrand is a great reflection of what they’ve always done well: staying true to quality, backing independent makers, and building genuine relationships with the people who walk through the door

We’re proud to work with Haus of Alma and to play a part behind the scenes as they continue to grow a business that brings real character to our community.

Deadlines aren’t the hard part - it’s the last-minute scramble that costs you time, energy, and clear decisions. Being early isn’t about perfection; it’s about reducing stress and making better calls while you still have time to think.

If you lodge through a registered tax agent, 15 May is often the final deadline to have last year’s return lodged. Even if you think you’re “mostly there,” the last few pieces can take longer than expected - bank reconciliations, loan details, trust paperwork, missing invoices, or simply clarifying unusual movements.

Our latest blog outlines who this deadline generally applies to, why lodging on time matters (even if you’re paying tax), and what’s worth checking now so you’re not trying to pull everything together in May.

The same thinking applies to your investment property records. It’s much easier to get the tax treatment right at the time the work is done, rather than trying to untangle it later when the return is due.

With the ATO taking a clearer view on what counts as a repair versus a capital expense, the way you describe, categorise, and document the work matters. A little preparation now can help you avoid rework, delays, and surprises down the track.

Not sure whether a rental property expense counts as a repair or a capital cost? You’re not alone - and it can change how (and when) you claim it. A quick check and clear records upfront can save a lot of back-and-forth later.

If you lodge quarterly BAS yourself, March quarter is due 28th April.

It's important to note alternative dates depending on your situation:

∙ If you lodge monthly BAS – these are due 21st April.
∙ If you lodge your own quarterly BAS – these are due 28th April.
∙ If you use a tax agent to lodge your quarterly BAS – these are due the 26th May.

Whichever category your business falls into, getting organised early takes the pressure off and helps avoid last-minute surprises.

When it comes to rental properties, both residential and commercial, one of the most common (and costly) tax mistakes is treating a capital expense like a repair.

The difference matters because it affects when you can claim the cost: some expenses are generally deductible straight away, while others are claimed over time or form part of the property’s cost base. The ATO has issued clearer guidance and fact sheets on this, and the focus is firmly on what the work actually does.

In our latest blog, we break down the key principles, including common “grey areas” that catch people out, what the ATO generally looks for, and how to make sure your claim matches the work that was actually done. We also share some practical ways to keep your records clear, so tax time is smoother and your position is easier to support if questions come up.

Assumptions can be expensive in business - and FBT is a perfect example.

It’s easy to think you’ll “cruise through” because you’ve always done it a certain way, or because it’s never been questioned before. But the rules are detailed, and the ATO’s focus can shift quickly. The safest approach is simple: don’t rely on assumptions. Know what benefits have been provided, keep clear records, and make sure your treatment matches the facts.

FBT is one of those areas where it’s easy to assume “we’re probably fine”... until you’re not. The ATO is paying closer attention, and the businesses that stay out of trouble are usually the ones with clean records and a simple system in place early (before April rolls around).

Our latest blog explains why FBT should be on your radar, what to start tracking now (including keeping an FBT ledger), and how to make the April return far less painful. Head to our website to read the full blog.
