01/07/2026

If you use your personal vehicle for work-related travel, you may be able to claim a deduction using the ATO's cents per kilometre method.

Examples of work-related travel may include:
βœ… Driving between different work locations.
βœ… Travelling from your workplace to visit clients or customers.
βœ… Attending meetings, training courses or seminars.
βœ… Travelling to pick up supplies or equipment for work.

For your 2025–2026 tax return:
βœ… Claim 88 cents per kilometre
βœ… Up to 5,000 work-related kilometres per vehicle
βœ… A maximum deduction of $4,400
The cents per kilometre method covers your vehicle's running costs, including fuel, servicing, registration, insurance and depreciation.

⚠️ Keep in mind:
β€’ Travel between home and your regular workplace generally isn't deductible.
β€’ You'll need to be able to explain how you calculated your work-related kilometres.

Looking ahead... The ATO has confirmed the rate will increase to 91 cents per kilometre for the 2026–2027 financial year, increasing the maximum claim to $4,550.

If you're in Mareeba and you're unsure whether you're eligible or what vehicle expenses you can claim, get in touch with our team today.
Book your tax appointment today and claim with confidence!

When it comes to your Sole Trader Tax Return, understanding what you can and can’t claim can make a big difference at tax time.
The ATO allows sole traders to claim business expenses that are directly related to earning their income, helping ensure you only pay tax on your net business profit β€” not your total turnover.

Common deductions may include:
βœ… Business operating expenses such as tools, equipment and supplies
βœ… Home office costs, if used for business purposes
βœ… Business-related phone, internet and software expenses
βœ… Motor vehicle expenses for business use
βœ… Professional services, including accounting and bookkeeping fees

πŸ“Œ Remember, all claims must be accurate, supported by records and directly linked to your business activities. Personal expenses can’t be claimed.
With increasing ATO data matching and focus on overclaimed deductions, keeping your records organised throughout the year is more important than ever.

At Shoebox Books & Tax Mareeba, we help sole traders stay compliant, organised and confident at tax time, so you can focus on running your business.
Get in touch today and let’s make your Sole Trader Tax Return simple and stress-free.

27/06/2026

If you've worked from home during the financial year, you may be eligible to claim a tax deduction for some of your work-related expenses.
One of the most common methods is the ATO's Fixed Rate Method, which allows eligible taxpayers to claim 70 cents per hour worked from home during the 2025–26 income year.

βœ… The 70c per hour rate covers:
β€’ Electricity and gas (heating, cooling and lighting)
β€’ Home and mobile phone usage
β€’ Internet and data expenses
β€’ Stationery and computer consumables

πŸ“‹ To use the Fixed Rate Method, you'll need to keep:
βœ”οΈ A record of the actual hours you worked from home (such as a spreadsheet, diary or timesheet)
βœ”οΈ Evidence of the expenses incurred, such as electricity, phone and internet bills

πŸ’» Purchased a desk, office chair, computer or other work-related equipment? These items may be claimed separately, provided you meet the ATO requirements and retain the appropriate records.

⚠️ It's important to remember that every taxpayer's circumstances are different. Eligibility for deductions depends on your individual situation, the records you keep and how the expenses relate to earning your income.
With increasing ATO data matching and compliance activity, maintaining accurate records throughout the year is more important than ever.

As registered Tax Agents, Shoebox Books & Tax Mareeba can review your individual circumstances, help identify eligible deductions and ensure your tax return is prepared accurately and compliantly.
Get in touch today and let's make tax time simple and stress-free.

🚨 SUPER PAYMENTS ARE CHANGING – IS YOUR BUSINESS READY?

If you currently use the Small Business Super Clearing House to process employee super payments, it's time to start planning ahead.
From 1 July 2026, the Small Business Super Clearing House will no longer be available. Combined with the introduction of Payday Super, many employers will need to review how they manage payroll and super contributions.

Here are a few things worth checking now:
βœ”οΈ Save copies of your historical super records
βœ”οΈ Research alternative super payment solutions
βœ”οΈ Review your payroll and bookkeeping processes
βœ”οΈ Ensure your software and systems are ready for the transition

For many small businesses, these changes may also affect cash flow management and payroll administration.

As registered BAS Agents, Shoebox Books Mareeba can help you prepare for Payday Super by reviewing your payroll processes, super payment systems and compliance obligations, so you're ready for the changes ahead.
Not sure if your current super process is ready for the changes?

Get in touch today and let's make sure your business is prepared.

πŸ’‘Tax time doesn’t have to be stressful. With good planning throughout the year, small businesses can stay compliant, avoid surprises and potentially save money at EOFY.
Here are 5 important tax tips for 2026: πŸ‘‡

1.Understand your tax obligations.
Your responsibilities depend on your business structure and may include GST, BAS, PAYG and income tax.
2.Claim eligible deductions.
Expenses like bookkeeping, software, insurance, advertising and home office costs may be claimable.
3.Use the Instant Asset Write-Off.
Eligible businesses with turnover under $10 million may be able to immediately deduct assets under $20,000 installed before 30 June 2026.
4.Stay on top of BAS deadlines Up-to-date bookkeeping makes BAS lodgement easier, helps you meet ATO deadlines, and reduces the risk of penalties

A lot of business owners assume payroll is running fine… until a mistake is picked up later.
The problem is, payroll issues can go unnoticed for months β€” and by the time they’re discovered, they’re often stressful, time-consuming, and expensive to fix.

Here are some of the common issues we see:
⚠️ Employee pay errors that can lead to costly back-pay corrections
⚠️ Fair Work compliance issues
⚠️ STP reporting errors creating ATO issues
⚠️ Super mistakes that can lead to extra costs and penalties
⚠️ Incorrect award interpretation or missed pay updates

And the reality is… many business owners don’t realise there’s a problem until an employee asks questions or a review uncovers errors.

A payroll health check can give you peace of mind that everything is accurate, compliant, and up to date.

As registered BAS agents, we help businesses stay compliant and avoid costly payroll mistakes down the track.
If your payroll hasn’t been reviewed recently, now is a great time to check it.

Let us handle your books, so you can handle your business!
