The Super Tax Most People Don’t Know About

Josh and Billy discuss one of the lesser-known tax implications of superannuation when it comes to passing wealth on.

While super is often viewed as a tax-effective way to build retirement savings, it can potentially be taxed by up to 17% when passed to certain beneficiaries after death.

They break down why this matters for families with larger super balances and why understanding your super strategy is an important part of estate planning.

The Age Pension System Debate

Josh and Billy discuss one of the biggest debates around Australia’s age pension system: how the family home is treated under the current rules. They explore the difference between someone owning a multi-million-dollar home while receiving a pension compared to someone renting with significant superannuation but receiving little or no support.

They break down the role of means testing, how other countries approach pension systems, and whether the current treatment of the family home creates an imbalance.

The business tax traps that can get ugly fast

In this episode of The Winner’s Playbook, Josh sits down with Adam Jacobson, Accounting Principal of Link Wealth Accounting, to unpack what business owners need to know before small problems become expensive ones.

They break down company structures, family trusts, asset protection, GST registration, first-year cash flow, tax planning, and why getting the setup right from day one can save a lot of pain later.

They also dive into Division 7A loans, how business owners can accidentally end up owing money back to their company, and why delaying the issue can make it harder to fix.

The big takeaway: running a business is not just about making money. It is about structure, cash flow, tax planning and having the right advice around you before things get messy.

The Tasmanian team is officially part of Link Wealth.

The rebrand is now well and truly in place, with new signage across the Moonah office and the Link Wealth name showing up from just about every angle.

More importantly, we’re very happy to have the Hobart team officially on board.

Behind the new look is the same local team, including two advisers Daniel McCarthy and Jared Schrank, who have built strong relationships with their clients over the years and continue to put everything into the work they do.

For us, this next chapter is about building on what they’ve already created, supporting the team as they grow and continuing to look after clients with the same care they’re used to.

A warm welcome to Candace Rogers, Tiarne Field, Courtney Abel, Nicole Grundy and Tamika Temple.

We’re really excited to have you all as part of Link Wealth.

The Super Tax Trap Most Australians Don’t Know About

Josh and Billy break down how superannuation can be taxed differently depending on who receives it after your death.

While super can be a powerful way to build wealth, understanding the taxable and tax-free components is important when planning for your beneficiaries.

They explain why your beneficiary choices matter and how different strategies can impact the amount your family ultimately receives.

That’s a wrap on the Link Wealth Conference 2026.

Three days in Marysville gave us a chance to look at where Link Wealth is heading and, importantly, make sure the whole team was on the same page about what comes next.

One of the highlights was hearing from Tristan Knowles, a six-time Paralympian, Paralympic gold medallist and two-time world champion who was also awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to sport.

Tristan spoke openly about the adversity he has faced throughout his life and career, and what it takes to keep moving forward when things don’t go to plan.

The Amazing Race around Marysville brought out another side of the team too, with Steve’s team somehow taking out the win.

We’re still not sure whether that came down to strategy, a suspicious amount of local knowledge, or whether being MD gets you early access to the map.

Either way, the competitive streak at Link Wealth runs pretty deep.

Across the three days, we came away with a clearer picture of where we’re going and the part everyone will play in getting us there.

We left Marysville with a roadmap.

Now it’s time to put it into action.

Investing in Private Markets Through Super

Billy and Steve discuss the opportunities and risks of investing in private markets, including the trade-off between potential long-term growth and limited liquidity compared to traditional share market investments.

They explore why these types of investments can suit investors with longer time horizons, such as people building wealth through superannuation, and the challenges involved in making these opportunities available to retail investors.

Billy and Steve discuss the challenges businesses face operating in Victoria, from higher taxes and payroll costs to the complexity of navigating different regulations.

They explore whether the state has become a more difficult environment for businesses and how these factors influence decisions when choosing where to establish and grow a company.

They also discuss the broader impact of increasing costs on business owners, property investors, and the importance of creating an environment that supports growth.

To get to Marysville, you drive the Black Spur. An hour of tight corners under the tallest flowering plants on earth.

You can't see around the next bend. You just trust the road goes somewhere good.

A fitting start to Day 1 of the Link Wealth Conference 2026.

Our Melbourne and Hobart teams both made the trip up.

We spent the afternoon on where Link Wealth is heading over the next 3 to 10 years, and the steps that get us there.

Not a plan for a few people to carry. One everyone in the room has a part in building.

We've come a long way. What comes next is the more interesting part.

Two more days to go.
