How would you fix Australia’s tax system?

In this episode of The Winner’s Playbook, Josh Lee - Financial Adviser and Billy Norman - Financial Adviser unpack the latest detail around the government’s proposed trust changes and what they could mean for business owners, investors and family groups.

They break down discretionary trusts, rollover relief, company structures, franking credits, stamp duty issues, and why restructuring may not be as simple as it sounds.

They also put their own political hats on and debate what they would change in Australia’s tax system, from income tax and GST to business incentives, housing, productivity and government spending.

The big takeaway: tax reform is never just about raising more money. It is about creating the right incentives for people to work, invest, build and grow.

Investing for your kids is not as simple as it sounds

In this episode of The Winner’s Playbook, Josh Lee - Financial Adviser breaks down what parents need to know before investing for children under 18.

He unpacks minor tax rates, savings accounts, investment income, informal trusts, tax file numbers, investment bonds, and why the way you set things up from the start can make a big difference later.

Josh also explains how to think about your timeline, whether you are investing for school fees, a first home, a first car, or simply giving your kids a better financial head start.

The big takeaway: investing for your kids can be powerful, but the structure matters just as much as the investment itself.

Billy and Steve discuss how business decision-making requires anticipating future trends rather than just focusing on the present. Managing cash flow, profit and loss, growth, industry changes, regulations, technology, AI, and staff expectations all require forward planning.

Decisions made today are often designed to position the business 5, 10, or even 20 years into the future, building a strategy that accounts for what is likely to happen over that timeframe.

In this episode, Billy Norman - Financial Adviser and Steve Sloane - Financial Adviser explain why predicting future trends is essential for sustainable business growth and strategic planning.

Is it much harder to build wealth today?

In this episode of The Winner’s Playbook, Josh Lee - Financial Adviser and Billy Norman - Financial Adviser debate whether today’s generation has it harder than the generations before them when it comes to building wealth.

They unpack housing affordability, rising rents, HECS debt, tax changes, negative gearing, self-managed super fund property rules, and why the old path of getting a job, buying a home and slowly paying it off may not work the same way anymore.

They also dive into the other side of the argument, including technology, AI, online businesses, global investing, and why younger Australians may have more opportunity than ever, if they know how to use it.

The big takeaway: the old wealth-building path has changed. The opportunity is still there, but the rules are different.

Billy and Steve discuss whether current pressures on banks affect businesses or homeowners trying to get finance. At this stage, they do not see it as a risk. Borrowing may involve more careful scrutiny for shareholders, especially for recent purchases, but overall lending remains stable. Banks would only tighten exposure if the economy experiences a significant downturn or rising unemployment.

In this episode, Billy Norman - Financial Adviser and Steve Sloane - Financial Adviser explain how bank pressures may influence lending and what factors could change the risk environment for borrowers.

This includes lending to businesses, cash flow loans, asset purchases, and commercial property financing. Essentially, it encompasses all lending in the non-residential market.

In this episode, Billy Norman - Financial Adviser and Steve Sloane - Financial Adviser break down the basics of commercial lending, what it covers, and how it differs from borrowing for a home.

Capital allocation mistakes in business.

Billy and Steve discuss common mistakes businesses make when allocating capital. The worst scenario is spending money on projects or purchases that fail because proper due diligence was not done.

Paying down debt is simple and safe, and distributing profits is fine, but investing in the wrong business or building a tech solution that fails can result in significant cash loss. These errors are especially common in financial services, highlighting the importance of careful planning and decision-making.

In this episode, Billy Norman - Financial Adviser and Steve Sloane - Financial Adviser explore how to approach capital allocation, avoid costly mistakes, and make smarter investment decisions in business.

After the EOFY rush, this one was well earned.

The lead-up to 30 June is always a busy stretch in financial services, so it was good to get the Link Wealth team together for a proper reset.

We started with lunch in Docklands before heading to Prison Island, where every room brought a different challenge and a few hidden competitive streaks came out pretty quickly.

It was a fun afternoon away from the usual pace and a great way to celebrate the effort the team put in during a big EOFY period.

Everyone made it out, which feels like a win.
