The Australia-Korea Business Council (AKBC) welcomes the announcement that Low Emission Technology Australia (LETA) will provide A$1 million in co-funding for a world first South Korean project that captures CO2 from a coal-fired power station and converts it into high value materials used in EV batteries and semiconductors.

The “Coal2Carbon” initiative, led by Korean energy company SGC Energy in Gunsan, represents an important example of how Australia and Korea can work together to accelerate industrial decarbonisation while also supporting emerging critical minerals and advanced manufacturing supply chains.

The project aims to convert captured CO2 into carbon nanotubes and graphite, materials increasingly critical to next generation lithium ion batteries, semiconductors and advanced technologies. If successfully commercialised at scale, initiatives like this have the potential to transform how industries think about carbon, not simply as an emissions challenge, but as a future industrial input.

This announcement also highlights the growing strategic alignment between Australia and Korea across clean energy, critical minerals, battery value chains and low emissions technology development. As both countries continue to pursue industrial decarbonisation and economic resilience, bilateral collaboration in commercially scalable technologies will become increasingly important.

AKBC continues to support stronger Australia-Korea partnerships across clean energy, advanced manufacturing, CCS, critical minerals and future focused industrial technologies that strengthen long term bilateral economic cooperation.

We congratulate LETA, SGC Energy and all project partners on this innovative initiative and look forward to seeing further Australia-Korea collaboration in next generation low emissions technologies.

📅 Plan ahead for June: Korean public holidays 📅

June includes two public holidays in Korea, both of which can affect business operations and scheduling.

🔹3 June – Local Election Day (지방선거일) South Korea conducts nationwide local elections to choose mayors, governors, and thousands of local councillors across the country. Election Day is a public holiday, resulting in most businesses and schools being closed.
🔹6 June – Memorial Day (현충일) Memorial Day is a significant national day of remembrance in Korea, honouring those who gave their lives in the service of the nation.

To our Australian stakeholders, expect reduced availability on these dates, particularly for government offices and public institutions. We recommend planning meetings around these holidays and allowing flexibility in response times.

📩 To learn more about Korean conglomerates - Chaebol, join our online training session next Wednesday, on 24 June.

The Australia-Korea Business Council (AKBC) welcomes the announcement that Low Emission Technology Australia (LETA) will invest A$3.48 million in partnership with POSCO’s N.EX.T Hub to accelerate carbon capture technology development at the Pohang Steelworks in Korea, one of the world’s largest integrated steel plants.

This initiative represents another important milestone in the Australia-Korea clean energy and industrial decarbonisation partnership, demonstrating the practical collaboration taking place between Australian industry and Korea’s globally significant manufacturing sector.

As Australia’s single largest export customer and one of the world’s leading steelmakers, POSCO plays a critical role in the bilateral economic relationship. Supporting technologies that reduce emissions from existing steelmaking processes while maintaining industrial competitiveness is essential to both countries’ long term economic and decarbonisation objectives.

Over the past two years, AKBC has played an instrumental role in supporting engagement between LETA and POSCO by helping connect the right stakeholders across industry and facilitating dialogue that contributed to enabling this collaboration. This outcome reflects the importance of trusted bilateral relationships and long-term engagement in advancing commercially meaningful Australia-Korea partnerships.

AKBC remains committed to strengthening collaboration between Australian and Korean industry leaders across decarbonisation, carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, critical minerals and advanced manufacturing.

We congratulate LETA and POSCO on this important initiative and look forward to seeing further Australia-Korea collaboration accelerate across the clean energy and industrial transformation sectors.

🤝 AKBC in Action 🤝

🌏 While events remain a key part of our calendar, AKBC has continued to invest in member engagement and building meaningful connections across our network. 🇦🇺🇰🇷

On 21 May 2026, AKBC CEO Liz Griffin and Head of Industry Groups Jenny Kang met with Boh Kim from Atomy Oceania to discuss business growth, consumer engagement and opportunities across the Australia–Korea corridor. 🇦🇺🇰🇷

The discussion highlighted Atomy’s expanding global presence and its commitment to delivering high-quality consumer products at reasonable prices through its unique direct distribution model.

🔹Atomy's Australian honey products are locally sourced and produced in Australia before being exported to Korea and other global markets. This highlights the growing opportunities for Australian premium food and wellness products within Korea’s consumer market and Atomy’s role in supporting Australia–Korea trade connections.
🔹With a strong focus on wellness, beauty, and personal care products, Atomy continues to build a growing customer base across Australia and globally.

AKBC has also been pleased to showcase Atomy products through a number of AKBC events, where Atomy generously provided gifts for guests and speakers. The products were very well received and helped introduce Korean brands to a broader Australian business audience. Atomy Oceania is an AKBC member.

AKBC looks forward to continuing to support Atomy Oceania’s growing presence in Australia and across the Australia–Korea community.

🤝 AKBC in Action 🤝

On 21 May 2026, AKBC CEO Liz Griffin and Head of Industry Groups Jenny Kang attended the Corvus Technology Solutions new facility opening event. It was fantastic to see the company’s growth journey and strong Australia–Korea partnership in defence manufacturing. 🇰🇷🇦🇺

It was fantastic to see strong support from both Australia and Korea at the event, including Hon. Colin Brooks MP, Victoria’s Minister for Industry and Advanced Manufacturing and Minister for Defence Industry, Mr Jin Kwan Oh, Consul-General of the Republic of Korea in Melbourne, Richard Marshall, General Manager at Hanwha Defence Australia, and Byongkeon Kim, CEO at MNC Solution, who travelled from Korea to attend the opening.

Two years ago, Corvus was awarded a contract with Hanwha Defence Australia for the manufacture of Redback In-Arm Suspension units. Working closely with MNC Solution, the company has successfully undertaken a transfer of technology from Korea to Australia, helping build local manufacturing capability, skilled jobs and stronger sovereign defence capability in Australia.

From humble beginnings, Corvus has rapidly grown into a new advanced manufacturing facility in Victoria, supported by the Victorian Government and strong cooperation with Korean partners. The partnership between Corvus, Hanwha Defence Australia and MNC Solution is an excellent example of the long-term opportunities created through Australia–Korea industrial collaboration.

Congratulations again to the Corvus team on this significant milestone. AKBC looks forward to continuing to support stronger Australia–Korea partnerships across defence, advanced manufacturing and technology. Hanwha Defence Australia and Corvus Technology Solutions are both AKBC members.

🤝 Master your Korean Business Landscape – Know where to seat your Korean counterparts

Where you sit in a Korean business meeting matters more than you might think.

In Korea, hierarchy extends beyond communication and is reflected in how meeting are structured. Seating arrangements are designed to show respect, establish roles and create a clear sense of order from the moment the meeting begins. Typically, the most senior guest is seated in the central position, facing the entrance, while the host side is positioned closest to the door.

Korean business culture places strong emphasis on showing consideration and respect to guests. As a result, guests are often offered the best seats, such as those with a better view or located further from the door. Similar seating principles also apply during business meals. If the Korean side says, “Please have a seat here,” it is generally best to follow their guidance rather than choosing your own seat. It is advisable to avoid sitting down before the most senior person. When a senior person enters the room, it is customary to stand up briefly to greet them as a sign of respect.

Understanding these protocols can help you avoid unintentional missteps, demonstrate cultural awareness and make a strong first impression. Being mindful of these details also allows you to navigate meeting with confidence and strengthen relationships with your Korean counterparts.

Check the tile above to see how you should set up your meeting rooms.
