Shavuot was originally an agricultural festival, marking the beginning of the wheat harvest. During the Temple period, the first fruits of the harvest were brought to the Temple, and two loaves of bread made from the new wheat were offered. This aspect of the holiday is reflected in the custom of decorating the synagogue with fruits and flowers and in the names Yom ha-Bikkurim (“Day of the First Fruits”) and Ḥag ha-Qazir (“Harvest Feast”).

Interestingly, Shavuot is sometimes referred to as Pentecost, following the Greek word for “fifty”, because it takes place exactly 50 days after the first seder (a part of Passover).

Most people in Australia celebrate the Easter holiday. Some do this for religious reasons, however, just like Christmas, for many people Easter has become less about religion. Others simply enjoy the long weekend, with many states and territories recognising two public holidays – Good Friday and Easter Monday. People might head to Mass at their local church, gather for a meal with family, or catch up with friends.

Ramadan Mubarak.

The Islamic holy month of Ramadan is a time for Muslims all over the world to renew their focus on spiritual life and its practical application in daily life.

During Ramadan Muslim people abstain from food and drink during daylight hours. This fast, called sawm, is one of the five pillars of Islam. To get through a long day without food, Muslims will often wake up early to eat a meal called suhur before daybreak. During the day Muslims are encouraged to engage in charity and devote extra time and attention to spiritual activities, such as praying and reading the Quran.

Purim commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from Haman, an official of the Achaemenid Empire who was planning to have all of Persia's Jewish people killed, as recounted in the Book of Esther.

Purim usually begins with the reading of the Megilla, which refers to the story of Esther, in the synagogues for many Jewish Australians. Graggers, which are Purim noisemakers, are used to drown out the name of the villain Haman when the story of Esther is read. Various types of graggers or other noisemakers, including clappers, are sold in Australia prior to Purim.

Drinking alcohol, mostly wine, is another important tradition of Purim, most people assume that one must become so befuddled that he can no longer distinguish between the most wicked of people and the most righteous.

There are many other spectacular activities such as dressing up and hiding faces, giving charity and food gifts, making symbolic triangular cookies and many more.

Why does International Women’s Day still matter? IWD is a day to recognise how far we've come towards gender equality, but also how far we have left to go. Back in 1911, only eight countries allowed women to vote, equal pay for equal work was unheard of – if women were allowed to work at all. Nowadays women are free to vote, they run corporations, do politics as well as all other things their grandmothers couldn’t think of.

Today we gather once more to celebrate the achievements of women, whether social, political, economic or cultural and remind ourselves of the way which is still ahead of all of us. Happy International Women’s Day!

The new Licensee is Lifespan Financial Planning Pty Ltd 23 065 921 735 AFSL 229892 (Lifespan) and while our time with Synchron has been good we believe this new License will be an excellent fit for us. Lifespan will now be responsible for all of our financial advice. Please note that there will be no changes to the products you hold or the cost of those products due to this transfer.

As part of the transfer, Lifespan will obtain access to your personal information for us to continue to provide you with ongoing services. If, for any reason, you do not wish to transfer your policies/accounts to Lifespan, write us on [email protected] that you wish you opt out of the transfer and your accounts and policies will become unadvised and future dealings relating to your financial planning needs would need to be between you and your insurer or fund manager.
