On this day, 45 years ago, Sharon Buchanan OAM made her Hockeyroos debut 🇦🇺🏑
Affectionately known as ‘Bucky’, Sharon Buchanan is one of Australia’s most decorated and respected hockey players. Born in Busselton, WA, she rose from a standout junior to become the 285th Hockeyroo in March 1981, going on to be selected for four Olympic Games, including the historic gold medal win in Seoul in 1988.
A gifted midfielder renowned for her vision and skill, Sharon captained the Hockeyroos from 1989–1993, was named in the World XI three times, and finished her career with 186 international caps and 57 goals. She also claimed medals at four World Cups and four Champions Trophies, earning Player of the Tournament honours in 1991.
Inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame and Hockey Australia Hall of Fame, Sharon Buchanan remains a true legend of the game.
